Google and Facebook (for 2) Stay On and Use Up Battery

On my laptop, when I use Facebook or Google or somesuch, and then close the window, it shuts off. On my phone, it apparently stays running, scouring the net for things it wants me to know. At these times my battery nosedives in a surprisingly short time. Also, FB notifications pop up all the time.
I can't see a button or X to close these things.

How do I get them to shut off? How do I decide how FB will behave?

Do I just need to be 60 years younger?

Have you checked your battery usage stats to see which app is responsible for most of the battery usage?

It's unlikely that the Google app would be responsible. It's much more likely that Facebook is the culprit, since their app is notorious for poor coding. If you must use Facebook, I would suggest relying on the website rather than the app. You can do that temporarily, at least, to see if your battery life improves significantly.
