google+ and hangouts crashing and causing lag?

after the google+ and hangouts updates, i keep noticing my note 3 lags when doing wahtever misc operation i am doing, whether it's scrolling through my screens, exiting/opening an app.

i will see the screen stall...and then about a min later, i either see google+ stopped responding error or hangouts stopped responding error.

anyone else have this issue?

using unlocked note 3, n9005, int'l version. rooted. running aviate.

tried uninstalling and reinstalling updates. still keeps crashing. hangouts seems to crash as soon as i enable sms. and each time i try to start a new hangout it crashes.

decided to uninstall updates until next round of updates. hopefully then both g+ and hangouts will stop crashing
