It just registers your phone with google. It does not "Force an update". It just says to google , Hey, I'm here. This happens every time you power it up, and it tracks your IP via the google talk application and market from there on.

You can send that checkin all you want, but it won't get your OTA any faster. When your serial number comes up it will sent the update notification. Not a moment before.

But what if I did it just over and over and over? Maybe my phone would annoy the Google computer so much that it would relent and download the OTA just to get my phone to shut up? You know, like kids in the backseat of the station wagon asking, "Are we there, yet? Are we there, yet?"

You'd probably have to write a script that does that 100 times per second for the Google Computer to even notice you checking in too many times, for it to take any action.

Thanks for taking the moment to reply, but the comments were simply meant as a silly joke.

Does anyone know how the update is even applied? I read something about serial numbers? I have a hunch its applied regionally because I live on the east coast and I always seem to get the update after everyone else. FYI I bought the phone the second day after it came out so its not because I was one of the last people to buy it.

It really seems to be somewhat random. Probably based on the IMEI numbers, but I don't think it's anything to do with where you are at.

My wife and I got our NS's at the same time. The updates never show up together. Sometimes, it will be a few hours apart, other times, it's been almost a week apart.

FWIW, I got the notification overnight/early this AM. Ran the upgrade, which took a while to download and about 10-15 min to install (I was not paying attention).

So far so good. The screen swipe (to change screens) seems much snappier--almost iPhone/iPad like. Frankly, that is one feature of the iDevice that has always been better. But gingerbread improves this significantly.

I love the old-style tube TV shut off when you shut off the screen.

So that is my reaction after about an hour. So far so good . . .

I did notice that the update broke Google Voice.

Downloading the OTA now. The file size is like 45 megs, which is tough when you don't have 3g or even Edge at home.

Edit: After going through all that, it didn't install the update. It just restarted and I'm still stuck with 2.2.2 Also, my phone froze and I had to pull the battery afterwards. What do I do?

The easiest thing is to do a manual update. It's the same update file, but you put on the SD card yourself and follow the procedure. Took my phone about 5 - 10 mins to do the full update.

My update arrived late last night, but I left it alone until this morning. I plugged the phone into the charger, began the download and went to feed the livestock. I don't know how long the download took, but when I returned to the phone (maybe 20 min later) it was completed and ready for the install.

That went off without a hitch.

As for Gingerbread...I still predict a lot of folks will be disappointed, especially those who were apoplectic over the delayed rollout to the N1.

Folks, it is really nothing. There is better battery life, there is copy and paste, the system might be a little faster. That's it. The "new" UI touch of having a black menu bar is downright ugly.

I don't have NFC, I already use (and like) Swiftkey, I don't have a large display screen. This is the very definition of a minor update, and it was comical seeing folks get in an uproar over something so inconsequential.

Now, Ice Cream Sandwich--that's another deal. This is supposed to be the merger of Gingerbread and Honeycomb, and if it means a better-looking UI, I'm all for that. The guy from WebOS is now in charge and there is a chance we'll get a much nicer interface that what we're stuck with for now.
