Is anyone else bothered by the new Google App and its inability to have a field where you can enter text? I also dislike how the main screen does not initially show my news, commutes etc when I enter the app after double clicking the home button twice. Kind of really want the older app back and after researching the only way possible seems to change the language. Any suggestions? Any sites that feature older apps for download?

What do you mean by the inability to enter text in a field? Are you talking about Google Assistant or the main Google app (i.e., the Google Now screen)? When I open my Google app on my Nexus 6P (by tapping the Google app shortcut icon), I still get the usual search bar at the top and the cards below it.

This is what I get now when using Google assistant. I used to hold down home key and page would open with an option to click on the microphone or you could enter text and search, then I also could see my weather, my commute, my news, etc.

That is Google Assistant. As @B. Diddy said you can use the Google app icon or put the search bar widget on your home screen. I use that for quick searches as it also has the mic option.

Another option is to use a 3rd party launcher like Nova (which is awesome). With it, I customize my Home button so that a short tap (while on the homescreen) brings up the traditional Google app, while a long-press brings up Google Assistant.

Wasn't aware Nova could do that, I may have to pay more attention to it.

Also you can download a side app from nova that allows you to store from left to get Google now like the stock Google launcher. Non root very nice.
