Google - Clown Academy killing off older thermostats because planned obsolescence

I'm not even summarizing. Just simply stop buying Google products. Full stop.

There is zero reason to shut these down other than as written in the article, planned obsolescence. It costs them nothing to keep them active.

It sucks, but to be fair, it's not just a Google thing. Ecobee ditched its first gen thermostat (from 2009) last year: https://support.ecobee.com/s/articles/Connectivity-and-Support-for-Legacy-Products.

I think any smart home device will always be at risk of discontinuation and loss of support at some point.

It's a valid point to be sure but ecobee isn't one of the richest companies in the world with a history of killing products for no reason and an infrastructure so large that it's little more than a ping worth of data.
