Google Contacts Merged When Downloaded to Bionic

When my Google contacts are synced with my Bionic some times 2 or more Google contacts are merged into one Bionic contact. It seems that it tries to figure out if they have very similar names or telephone numbers or email addresses and then may merge them.



How can I stop any merging or if any are currenly merged I would like to unmerge them (but I have 2500 contacts so I am really not looking to do it 1 at a time).



Would appreciate your help.

Spoke with Motorola (level 3 ) and they agreed that some contacts with similar information is merged incorrectly but they have no solution for the issue and there is no log file to find which contacts were merged.

They said they would give information to the engineers but gave me zero confidence that anything would be fixed (even in ICS).

I have a feeling they were placating you by saying all of that. I say that because it's not native to the Bionic or Motorola even. It's actually Android operating as it was designed to. There is a method to unmerge them, however. I am trying to remember it here, so it might be a little off, so use common sense in looking at the screen, don't look for exact selections and screens from me.

Go to your contacts, pick the contact that was merged from multiple contacts, press Edit. I believe the contacts are separated by "who" they came from originally in that large contact conglomeration you don't like. Find a menu choice somewhere that says un-merge or separate or something like this. You may have to individually pull one contact out of the group at a time until you are left with one contact you originally wanted.

Thanks, I am aware of how to unmerge contacts but since I have 2500 contacts and do not know which ones were merged it is too time consuming to do the unmerge and I will live with it this way until I trip on the merged contacts.
