Google default messaging app - notification sounds

When I receive a text from someone, I go into the menu and select People and Options. I change the notification sounds from the default to a different notification. If I accidentally delete the text message, when that person sends me another text message, it returns back to the default notification sound.

I cannot seem to find a way to customize notifications for texts. I found the area for ringtones. Am I missing something or is there another texting app that I should be using to accomplish this?
