Google hangout

I had somebody on verizon send me a pic text from verizon to my GV number and I got nothing, no notification nothing on any of my devices

Did you get the update to 2.3? You said earlier you didn't download an update. Look for the update.

Yes, it's 2.3. The functionality seems to be coming in waves without another update. Must be at Google's end.

I was able to send a pic to a verizon phone and they got a link, but I have yet to receive an MMS through hangouts

Yes, it seems hangouts will receive mms to my SIM number, but not to my GV number. I'm starting to wonder why I ever started on gv.

Yep I got fed up long ago. Most of my important contacts use my real phone number now. GV is such a great concept. Insanely useful but completely crippled by lack of MMS. The worst thing is knowing that somebody may have sent you a message and you will never know. I hate every time I talk to somebody and get the "why did you never respond to the [pic/group message] I sent."

On the plus side, the new dialer is cool. GV is now a full on VOIP service that can turn any internet connected device into a phone without a carrier calling/texting plan. No more fumbling with SIP forwarding ect. You could get a data only plan and still have a phone. VOIP should be pretty easy on data usage.

I just tested it and was able to receive and listen to my voice mail in hangouts just fine (was also received in the google voice app strangely). The transcription was pretty awful as usual. Hope they integrate google voice to speech tech soon.

Is there some trick to playing your voice messages in hangouts? I see them on the list but they won't load to play. They play in GV and I can also set that to appear and play from my phone log, but I'd prefer playing them from hangouts.

No trick I know of. I just worked for me. For what it's worth I have voicemail display in the call log turned off.

Hah. I used to have that turned off too, but now I need it to play my voice mail. Unless I go back to Google voice for that, which had always been kind of slow to download voice mail.

I removed google voice, so my carrier's voicemail took over as the voicemail provider. Yes, the voice mail does appear in hangouts - - - for one second - - - then it disappears and prompts me to send a text to the number where the call came from. When I was using Google Voice as the voicemail provider, it showed me the voice message, but refused to load it to play.

Meanwhile, every time I want to use Hangouts to send a text, it sends me to a Hangout, and I need to mess with the contacts to send an MMS. And it shows me a million strangers recommended by Google Plus, and I'm not even signed up for Google Plus.

This is possibly the most confusing and botched launch of an important product I have experienced, even by the standards of the software business, where everything is shipped before it is ready. The two most basic functions of my phone, texting and voice, have become a complete mess. I am abandoning hangouts and going back to native apps and phasing out google voice as quickly as I can.

Well, today looks like I can finally hear my voice mail in the hangouts app! Yay! For the longest time, since I have multiple gmail accounts and only one Google+ account, the purported solution was to add Google+ to the account that had migrated from Google Voice which would then allow hangouts to play voicemail. I did not, and, happy I didn't. Seems today Google flipped the switch. Thanks
