Google+ Locations without location history?

I've searched all over the web and find surprisingly little info about g+ location sharing... So anyways recently my freinds stopped being able to see my location in google+. Finally figured it out was because my location history was turned off (although location sharing was on).

I'm pretty sure my location history didn't get turned off by itself, so maybe a g+ update in the past few months changed something. I dunno. But anyways I don't want my location history stored by google. I realize I can delete it anytime manually, but that requires me doing something regularly.

So first question, is there a way to make google+ location sharing work without location history turned on?

If not, is there a way to automatically delete my location history periodically, like every hour or something... maybe an app or script or setting or something?
