Google Maps Dark mode

Yesterday while traveling, the map suddenly changed to the Dark Mode. The change made the map elements much more visible. It was a welcome change. Today, the Dark Mode is gone. How can I enable it to ON permanently. All other apps are in Dark Mode. Thanks.

To my understanding, It should go dark mode only at night (or when the sensor senses a decrease in light). If it was on during the day all the time you wouldn't be able to see very well.

Under map settings you can switch from automatic, which I assume yours was on, and put it directly on night. See below.

Thanks. I never thought that the Automatic setting controlled that. I rarely drive at night and never noticed. DUHHH. Thanks again.

I've had it set this way for quite a while, and love it. I just wish the whole thing went dark, not just the navigation map. I wonder if there's any plan to create a full dark mode for Maps.

I find it amazing that dark mode kicks in even when going through a short tunnel. Engineers be engineering!
