Google Maps Freezing, even after uninstalling updates

I've seen this issue reported in the archives and the usual solution is to uninstall updates. I was on v 9.x.x, uninstalled updates and now it is on 7.7.0, and the option to uninstall updates is gone. Before it would freeze the phone once navigation started, now it merely freezes the app, still useless of course.

I have 900 MB free space, which is more than I usually have.

Kit Kat 4.4.4

Anyone have any suggestions??

Is there a chance this issue has to do with still having 4.4.4 and not Lollipop?

Another issue is very slow response opening hotmail emails.
