Google maps keeps crashing

[Android Central Question]

I have a Huawei p20 lite android version 9. For a while now I haven't been able to use Google maps for driving directions. When I press start driving it crashes. It works with walking directions though. I think it happened since an update a few months ago. I found instructions online a while about how to revert to the previous update which seemed to work, but I can't remember how I did that now and I think it auto updated anyway and now is not working again. Would appreciate if someone knows how to fix this

See if a newer update is available , if not to Uninstall the current update long press Google maps >tap info>3 dots upper right corner tap and choose Uninstall update.
