Google Maps/Navigation no longer speaking street names

running a newer os wont fix the problem seeing that we are on the newest os. google is aware of the issue and working on a fix they just need some time.

I'm running AOKP build 35 (4.04 based) and got the newest maps last night. Tested it and my phone used my streets name.

Maps voice sucks anyway. I don't know why everyone is complaining...just look at the screen and turn where it shows you to turn. Or, if you're really interested in solving the problem, root your phone and run a newer OS (that's kind of the whole point of getting a Nexus).

This is illegal in some states... including the two I drive in all the time. I called Verizon technical support to find out if there was any way to be upgraded to 4.0.4 outside of the normal schedule but of course the answer is no. Was told would probably be rolled out within the next month. :'(

What's illegal, looking at your screen? Just mount it to the window...no different from any other gps device.

I think he was referring to the rooting. Which makes even less since.

No, I'm pretty sure he is referring to the fact that it is illegal to look at any screens while driving in some states. Whether it is your phone or a GPS device. I don't live there, but I'm pretty sure in California, you can't have your GPS mounted any where in your car (or maybe its just on the windsheild)... someone can clarify.

California is very restrictive as to where a GPS can be mounted. Here's the law...

"the GPS must be mounted within "a 7-inch square area in the lower corner of the windshield farthest removed from the driver (the passenger side) or in a 5-inch square area in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to the driver (the lower left corner of the windshield)"

I know that it works on my transformer pad fine. It may be the nexus that could be the problem.

Completely beside the point. The ICS voice is much improved, but even so, many of us are using the superior SVOX replacement voices for TTS.

It doesn't seem like this will be fixed any time soon. My only solution to this aggravating nightmare of a problem was to uninstall all updates and then install an APK for 6.5.1. Search for "maps 6.5.1 apk" and download and install, and you will have at least some of your functionality back. At least that way, we can actually use it safely.

Just tried this. The 6.5.1 API failed to install because same app/different signature error. Used the crippled navigation yesterdayand got an alternating male/female voice. Very strange.

Thanks, that did the trick. Maps 6.5.1 on 4.0.2 speaks the street names. Will be waiting for Google's fix one of these days.

I've been using the nav system on Droid X2 successfully, but I was traveling out of town last night and found myself trying to navigate a completely unfamiliar city wtih no voice support. Also, the system was unable to find GPS coordinates, no matter where I drove.

It was pretty scary, and I realized this is a feature I've relied on all the time with my Droid.

I had just downloaded the newest versions of Maps. By the way, in following this thread, I did try and uninstall maps and the nav, but the system wouldn't give me the uninstall option on them.

Is there another voice nav for the US that people recommend?

Thanks!

Installing maps 6.5.1 apk works for me on my Thunderbolt running Liquid Smooth ICS!! Thanks ByteMaster0

I'm having an issue with maps speaking number instead of street names. For exaple: "in 1,000 feet, turn right on 3031 then turn left on 2054" for people that don't know the area, they would get lost for sure.
