Google Maps: Stop by stop navigation for public transport?

I recently moved from ginger bread 2.3.4 Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro phone to the HTC One M8 which has Kit Kat.

I use public transport a lot and one feature that I love about Google maps was the ability to plot a journey with stop by stop navigation. Before, using my Sony I could plot a journey and it would tell me what bus to get on and it was clever enough to realise when I got on the bus and identify every bustop on the route and then give me and verbal prompt when it was time to get off the bus...

Now with the version of Google maps that I have with the HTC one phone it seems stop by stop navigation for public transport has been removed (or I don't know how to access it). If they so, why would they remove a very useful feature?

I did a little bit of digging and it seems that the 'useful' stop by stop navigtion that I'm used to was introduced on Google maps version 5.7

Hands on: Google Maps 5.7 adds stop-by-stop public transit Nav. and offline maps to Android | Digital Trends

...and that it was REMOVED from Google maps on version 8.0

Can any body also confirm if stop by stop transit navigation is has been removed?
