Google maps traffic notifications with muted voice guidance

Does Google maps call out traffic accidents and slowdowns when you have voice guidance muted?

For example, I don't need turn by turn when I go to work, but I'd like to know if there is a slowdown on my route and periodic trip check notifications to tell me how I'm doing on time. I get those when my voice guidance is on, but not when I mute it.

Is there a setting for this or is it all tied to voice guidance?

Nope, the mute option is 'universal'. You may get a notification if you set them in Google Now (will notify you of incidents on your route if you're going somewhere 'known'), but if you mute voice guidance in Maps, then any warning, prompt, etc. will also be muted.

Thanks! That's annoying! They should separate them out. My Google Now commute cards never work for me. I don't usually have location on, but I have a hidden calendar event with my 8-4:30 m-f work schedule and it still never shows up in the morning.

Unfortunately for that to work you do need Location On. The incidents card starts showing up once Google Now 'learns' your route/time habits, so you'd have to take the same route to work a few times for it to learn it and it'll tell you if there's an incident in that route around the times you usually take it.

From appointments with location information it takes your current location to estimate the time it would take you to get there so it can alert you in time.

Also, location history must be turned on for these to work.

Waze is perfect for this. Directions are muted, but all traffic related things are vocalized.

We need Waze on Android Auto.

Speaking of which.... Does anyone have any idea how to get rid of that big green navigation box on the left?
It kinda block half the screen and I would rather have it at the top or kinda smaller would be great.
