What is the mode shown on the arrow called? It used to always point the direction I am driving but no longer?

That means the view will adjust to keep the direction that the phone is facing towards the top of the screen (and is also the view that gives you that sort-of-3D mode). If you tap it, it should toggle to North Facing Up, and it will look more like a 2D map.

I know what it means, though it no longer works, I want to know what the mode is called correct jargon so I can go to Google forum

Ah, sorry! I guess I'd call it the compass toggle?

Did you already try clearing the app cache/data for the Google Maps app?

Thanks. It does look like a compass but it gives navigation view without a destination. On my s22 Ultra compass cannot maintain accuracy in a car.

Compass view works better on GPS not the compass. It used to use GPS until about 2 years ago. Worked perfectly. Now it sips.

Are you using a magnetic car mount, or are there any other strong magnets around?

No. As a matter of fact I was the passenger today so had the phone in my hand and tried moving it around to no effect. I did the photo calibration and the figure 8 calibration. Each said excellent when done but within 5 minutes Google Maps would say poor location try calibration.

Same thing happens in my car on a vent mount with no wireless charging nor magnetic attachments. It is mechanical.

I think I've had the issue from day 1 but I seldom use Google Maps when driving so it isn't as aggravating as when I am the navigator passenger.

Waze works fine but I would prefer Google Maps if it would work. They really shouldn't depend on compass at all since no compass works well in a car.

I'm sure that icon is a compass (looks like a propeller to me!) yet GM didn't always rely on the compass for navigation without destination. It used to use GPS which works much better.

Maybe a faulty unit? Do you know anyone else with the same phone who can test it in your car?

Do you have the Ultra? Does compass mode in Maps work properly in your car. From what I read in Google nobody's works properly.

BTW, everyone I know uses iPhone. I have never even seen another Ultra in the wild! LOL

Sorry, I have a Pixel 6 Pro. I haven't had an opportunity to use it in Driving Mode while navigating, because I always use my car's own nav system for that.

Compass mode isn't navigating to a location. It is just as you drive the map rotated so your arrow is headed straight up as it would IF you were navigating. I would think if it works in any phone it would work in a Pixel.

Thanks for all your help. I appreciate the time you took.

I have the S22 ultra and I haven't had a problem with Google maps although it is connected to my car via Android Auto but it works fine. It is odd that Waze works but not Google maps. I'm pretty sure they both use GPS for location. Could it be a setting in Google location settings?
