I'm trying very hard to use Google messages... but, it is so NOT user friendly when it comes to settings (which there are very few) or finding how to do something within the app.
I need a good crash course or cheat sheet

Group message, all names are in my contacts. On the actual thread, the names and their profile pic show on each reply. But some only show a phone number, no name, no pic.
Can't find a way to fix.

For the ones that only show a phone number, check your saved contact and make sure the number corresponds exactly (e.g., if there's a country code shown in the Messages app, make sure it's also in the saved contact).

Cleared cache, rebooted, didn't work. Had to pull up the profile on the number in question, drop down comes up and I chose the details option... it then pulls up the profile in your phone contacts, save and close. (I think that's all I did 😖)

I can't tell from your last comment if that means you got it working or not? The frustrated face is throwing me off.

It sounds like you're saying that resaving the contact corrects the problem, is this correct?

It doesn't make sense to me, but resaving the contact info to the messages app did fix the problem. Now I have 2 more to fix in the same thread. Yet, the problem wasn't an issue the day before... so I'm not sure what caused it.... therefore the funky face.

Hi , Google messages pretty straight forward messaging app what do you need help with can try help you ?
New question for Google messages... in a thread with several contacts, can you 'mute' the conversation? Since I feel like that will be a simple NO answer, I'll ask the next question before I forget it...lol.

In messages+ I could 'bookmark' messages that would keep them from being deleted (accidentally) when a thread was deleted. There was an option on the delete drop down that would let you check to delete bookmarked items if you decided not to keep them any longer. I used this constantly for (baseball etc) schedules sent to me or an itinerary of some sort... pretty much anything I didn't want to lose.

Very nice option google messages should consider.

You can turn off notifications for a specific group message thread. Open the thread, tap the 3-dot menu button at the upper right, then Group Details>Notifications, and turn off the Show Notifications toggle (or you can change it from Default to Silent if you still want notification icons but no sound).

I don't think Google Messages has any way to protect or lock a given message from being deleted. You can Pin a message thread so that it shows up at the top of your message thread list, but that won't prevent it from being deleted.

For any suggestions, send feedback to Google using the Feedback option in the app's settings.

With Google Messages there's no trash per se but there is archive. Now this will depend on how you accidentally delete messages. I usually accidentally delete things but swiping them away so this works really well for me. If you are the type that selects something that actually says "delete" this won't work for you because delete isn't an accident it's an intentional act. Anyway I'm pretty sure it's by default that if you swipe a message left or right in a deleting fashion it will go to archive where it can be recovered by selecting your archive list.

That is one setting that I found early on.

You quoted my message from earlier but didn't answer the question within, to say if any of this worked for you or not.

Here again you've quoted my message to tell me that you already knew about this but don't say if it's helpful or not, if swiping messages is how you accidentally delete things or if you're still looking for some other different solution.

Anyway, I looked a bit more, because I know what you were talking about when it asks if you also want to delete, I don't remember if it called them saved messages but whatever, just before you delete. I did find a way to star individual messages within a thread, but this only highlights the messages and makes them easier to find because you can search for stared messages. Adding a star however did not prevent the message from being deleted, nor did it cause the app to ask about saved messages.

Best wishes.
