So I've been using google messages for a long time now and love the spam filter. However, a few months ago, there was some glitch with it that it was closing the app everytime i tried to read messages. I switched so a different messaging app for a bit then switched back to Messages. Now the spam filter is no longer working. I tried turning that thing off and on and clearing cache and still nothing. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem?

there's nothing that says anything needs updating
Just out of curiosity, is there anything in your my "app section" of your play store that needs updating from the Google app or Android messaging?

I'm curious, how do you know the spam filter is not working? Are you receiving a lot of texts that are genuine spam and not being flagged as such?

obviously, else how would i know it's not working. if you've ever looked. spam texts get sent to the spam section so when you go there you see them. now, nothing is being funneled there except for the ones i manually put in and mark as spam. i used to get like 1 spam that manages to bypass it like once or twice a month. now it's daily spam, several times a day.

I thought that the "learning" was on-device and the phone learns better over time which messages to mark as spam and which not to. Maybe it takes a little time after first using Messages?

it's not learning. nothing is being funneled into the spam section. the way it works is that it doesn't just block the spam, it shunts it to a spam section. if nothing is there, it hasn't done anything.

Correct. I get a few every few months and they go into the spam section of Messages. But I also get true spam texts once in a while that are not detected and I have to manually mark them as spam. Google's Help page for Messages spam says that it is on-device learning and tries to catch spam messages and move them to spam before you see them. All I am saying is it's not perfect, spam gets through. And Google says that all of the detection is on-device learning, meaning your phone learns over time which messages to filter as spam. Maybe I am reading their Help page incorrectly, but that's how it sounds to me. Some are automatically flagged as spam on my Pixel 4 and others still get through and I manually mark them as spam.

well my phone stopped learning and it forgot everything it knew about how to put spam in spam folder then.
