Google Music does not see my on device music

i've been using google music fine as my music player ever since they replaced the default player. now for some reason it will no longer recognize the music i have on my device. what's changed?

What happens if you select "On Device Only"? Does it show nothing? Then I suggest going to Settings/Apps/Google Play Music and clearing the cache first. If that doesn't work, it wouldn't hurt to clear data, then resync.

Where do you keep your on-device music files?
