Google Nexus 5 (retail for $149) as a rival to the Ipod Touch

I read there was a galaxy player that's 5"screen running on gingerbread, specs are horrible and asking price is too much. Just a few weeks ago they announced a galaxy player 5.8 with as the name has a 5.8" screen (960x540), ICS, and 1gig of ram. Pretty much all that was released in terms of specs. As for the design it looks like a bigger galaxy s lll, no release date or price est.

Samsung Galaxy players are too expensive.

And they don't market them well.

Which mean they are not a rival to the Ipod Touch. A 5" tablet for $129 from Amazon will give the 3.5" $199 Ipod Touch a scare for sure.

Absolutely. Heck I didn't even know the galaxy player existed until cnet reported a 5.8 galaxy player coming soon. Tbh I wouldnt shy away from the 5.8 should the price be right. I use my handheld religiously at work and holding a 7" tab draws a little too much attention. A 5.8 would just be perfect!

for a portable music player, I'd much rather have a 3" screen that fits comfortably in one hand, than a 5" by 5" square. It's more a mini tablet, or large smartphone without the phone. I but the price is right for sure :)

5" screen does not mean 5" x 5". LCD screens are measured corner to corner, so the actual dimensions depend on the aspect ratio used. The Galaxy Nexus phone has a 4.65" screen, so we're talking just a little bit bigger than that.

I was reading on another forum about a guy that was researching music players for his mother. During his search, he came across a used Samsung Infuse for less money. Never had thought about it, but don't insert a sim card and you have a nice music player with a camera. Plus having access to the internet. And if you add Google Voice in connection with another app such as Talkatone, you could still text and make phone calls. Just something to think about.

Was referring to the actual dimensions for the kobo mini, and which are quoted in this forum as 5 by 5.25--which is essentially a 5" square.

Ah, I had overlooked that reference. I agree that a 5" square form factor would not be great (the only potential exception I might see is a perfectly square device that's designed to be omnidirectional, so you don't have to think about which way to hold it, and the connectors can face any direction needed in a given situation, but I'm still not sure it would be worth it). That Kobo has a HUGE bezel, which is just a big does of fail anymore. I would see the right design being more along the lines of a slightly oversized wifi-only smartphone at a discount price. My wife might want one - she's been tempted by my N7, since it would let her use all the cool apps, have a decent size screen, and no monthly fee.

OK, here's MY deal:

I own 10 ipods of various models. Now that I have newer devices such as a Bionic and a Nexus 7, guess what? All of our ipods sit unused. Why, you might ask? I can play music more easily on my Bionic (4G for Pandora everywhere) and around wifi, the speaker in the N7 blows away the bionic, so I like playing music (Pandora or my ripped songs) thru it's speaker. No need to resort to squinting at my Touch's small screen and it's speaker is absolute crap. The screen of our current Touchs are too small, and the new Touch is also TOO SMALL. No need for me to EVER upgrade to a newer Touch. Also, no need for a 5" N7 or other NON-PHONE with a screen size of around 5". What I want NEXT, is a 5+ inch Android phone to replace my already too-small bionic. A Sammy Note 2 is prolly what the doctor ordered, but seems it's not going to come to Verizon. My options are limited, so I'll wait til something equally cool in the phone space, hits Verizon. I see no need for a product smaller than the N7 that isn't a phone. I don't need products separated by just a couple of inches in diagonal measurement. Which goes to my other issue: a 10" tablet is too heavy for me. tried them. don't like them. 7" for a tab , and around 5-5.8" for a phone is just what I want. :)

http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/apple-announces-fifth-generation-ipod-touch-6-1mm-thin-88grams/

The iPod touch will be available in two flavors: a 32GB model ($299) and a 64GB number ($399). It will be sold in five colors: "raw aluminum," black, blue, yellow and red, and a (PRODUCT) RED version will also be available. Three hundred bucks too pricey for your next PMP? The last-generation touch will remain on the market, with the 16GB one going for $199 and the 32GB version selling for $249.

Ipod Touch 4" at $299 and $399.
Ipod Touch (older gen) 3.5" at $199 and $249.

Amazon and Google could compete with a 5" Touch.

Not sure they even need to make a new product here. A GSM Galaxy Nexus unconnected to a network does everything you would want a Google-ecosystem MP3 player to do. For that matter, so would just about any recent gen smart phone.

I fully intend to keep my GNEX around as a media player/backup once I upgrade... 1.5 years from now. Shoot, a GSM Galaxy Nexus with 32gb of storage straight from Google costs about the same as an iPod touch - but the GNEX has a bigger screen and is completely hackable for those that are into that sort of thing.

EDIT: Nevermind, the GSM GNEX only has 16gb internal storage. You can, however, get a used Verizon branded GNEX, with 32gb storage and slightly larger battery, for less than $300 used.

I would agree that they wouldn't need to make an all-new product. Just take something like a GS3 or GNex, take the cell radios out, maybe add a bit more storage, change the software to not include phone stuff, and set a lower price point.

At 5", I'd rather just use my phone... I wouldn't want a tablet anything smaller than a 7".
