Google Nexus 6 Quad core - single core??

I read some claimed specs for the Nexus 6 that compared it to two other highly regarded phones. The report indicated it was #1 for quad core processing, but #3 for single core. Now I'm pretty sure that any phone I would choose would serve my modest needs in a smartphone. However, it did make me curious what those numbers mean?

In real-life functioning when/how is single core processing vs quad core processing used? In real life, what strengths/weaknesses, if any would that indicate.

Again, I think this sounds like it will be a terrific phone, and I have never cared about having the #1 rated phone, but I'm just curious.

I was wondering the same thing. I read that article too (think it popped up on my google now articles to read)

Re: Quad core - single core??

The iPhone has the higher single-core floating point scores. These are just for operations like opening new apps, switching between apps, etc... The iPhone doesn't have quad-core, so it would make sense that the iPhone wouldn't score as high in it's current dual-core state against a quad-core mammoth that is the Motorola Shamu.

Keep in mind the operating systems these are running as well. iOS might not be anyone here's preference, but it's a pretty beastly operating system to be compatible with devices that are a few years old and don't come close to having the same specs as the new digs.

I wouldn't worry too much about the benchmarks, personally. Someone else who will post in here will probably have more information as to what these really mean, but ultimately when you get this whale in your hands, you'll just be enamored by it's awesome performance.

Re: Quad core - single core??

While benchmarks are fun to look at and playfully debate over, I don't think it makes THAT much difference. There are so many factors that go into making a phone work RIGHT. Is the software optimized for the device and hardware. Does it run and do all the things you want it to do without any hickups? Those are the things that matter to me. It does not matter if it tops the chart on a benchmark, but the phones camera app lags and takes bad pictures.

As I indicated in my initial post, I'm not concerned about the third place ranking for single core processing and I'm confident the Nexus 6, or, for that matter, all the Android phones I've considered, would be fully capable of doing everything I want to do with a phone, and more.. I'm not worried about it. I just wanted to know what the single core vs quad core was used for. I'm just trying to educate myself more about the inner workings of the phone. And I believe you answered that when you said that it is used for opening apps or switching between them So would it be appropriate to say that single core is for simpler, routine tasks, while the quad core comes into play for more complex, demanding tasks?

Re: Quad core - single core??

The single vs multi benchmarks are messed up... It's a silly way to quantify things.

don't stress about benchmarks... Processors are crazy fast now... The SD800 I've the nexus 5, the 801 in the G3, they all scream.

If that new nexus has a 805, it's going to be a blazing fast phone.

Re: Quad core - single core??

One more time---not stressed or concerned about the benchmarks. I only asked the question out of curiosity as to why or how the phone uses single core or quad core, i.e., for what functions. I guess I just assumed that it would always use quad core if it was available, just as my car, hopefully, is firing on all cylinders not just some of them.

Whoa buddy it sounds like you're really worked up about those benchmarks.

Don't sweat the benchmarks.

Benchmarks are pointless, especially on phones

Re: Quad core - single core??

I give up. Clearly I don't know how to clearly convey a simple question; i.e., what processes are single core and what processes are quad core. That's all I want to know, don't care which phone came in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd on benchmarks; I just want to know more about how the phones work.

Gdmin,

Thank you for the link! Just what I was asking for.

Re: Quad core - single core??

This phone runs stock Android with the latest Android 5.0 that is utilizing the new Android runtime. It's going to be faster than any other 1440p Android phones out there now. And it's going to feel just as fast as any 1080p phones (usually faster because it doesn't have bloated UI).

Yeah from the first post you seems so clear about what you're asking for.. People just like to complicate things...
