Google Now launcher not able to be set as default?

Hi,

So I have a brand new Galaxy S4 Mini after years of iPhone use so I'm a little new to the android platform, so this may be a dumb question, but I haven't been able to find a solution online.

I've been playing with different launchers, and I've been able to get several third party ones working fine. I decided I'd check out the Google Now launcher cause Google Now's pretty cool...

Here's my issue:
After installing the app and clicking on it, it asks me to clear the defaults for the launchers. So I do. Then I click on the app again and I get the "Complete action using..." launcher selector popup. But Google Now isn't listed as one of the possible launchers. Right now, I'm just getting the TouchWiz stock options and a third party launcher (Nova, if it makes a difference).

Am I doing something wrong in the launcher selection process? Or are there some system requirements for using Google Now that I'm unaware of?

Thanks!

Well ...

I installed it, and it tells me that I need a newer version of Google Search and allows me to install that. Then it still tells me that I need a newer version of Google Search. And it doesn't show up in the choice of launchers.

I think the "system requirements" are that you run it on the phone they developed it on and failed to test it on other phones. IOW, it's a big bust. I'm back to Nova now. Nothing in Google Now that looks even interesting, let alone better than Nova.

Edit: I got it working. (My error - I kept opening Google Search, not updating it.) Not worth the effort, IMO. Aviate was better, and that lasted 5 minutes before I uninstalled it.

just encountered this myself...
noted that Google app wants to update the Google Play services...
wondering if that is the cause for the launcher not showing up...
