Google Pay vs Samsung Pay

Both work the same. MST was useful for many years. But now NFC is almost universal. Samsung would't remove MST if they felt it was still really necessary in 2021. Google pay is a bit faster in that you only have to unlock the phone. With Samsung pay you have to unlock and then use fingerprint. Not a big thing, but it is one more step when compared to gpay.

I have always used Google Pay, very simple. You don't need to launch the app, just tap and go. I also get automatic notifications when any of my credit cards are used anywhere.

When you say they don't accept Samsung pay, you mean the store says to you that they don't accept? If it's a NFC terminal where Google pay works, don't see any reason why Samsung pay with NFC won't work.
Well, the store staff say it won't work, but you could be right. NFC is NFC, or it should be.

Gotta look at this way , Samsung users have both choices to use Google pay/Samsung pay other android phones only have google pay, use what best fits you .

Yeah most of the store staff don't know about stuff like this and yes it'll work with both Samsung pay and Google pay.

I used Samsung Pay until they removed MST; then I switched to Google Pay. I prefer Google Pay. It's a little faster and is available as a payment option in apps and on websites.

Samsung Pay has a setting that allows you to access it directly from the lock screen without unlocking the phone. You swipe up. Of course, you'll still have to use the fingerprint scanner to activate a credit/debit card.

N20U user here. Used Samsung Pay when I got my Note 8 and was the best because at the time for me in U. S. MST was more common than NFC.

Fast forward 3 years and NFC is everywhere so switched to Google Pay over a year ago and is my primary.

In my experience Google Pay so much faster than SP. More convenient to just FPS unlock to home screen and tap card reader GP is active. I keep SP swipe up active in case the rare case I need MST so it's a nice backup.

Too bad Samsung will be eliminating MST in future phones.

Since my newest samsung phone does not have mst, I will most likely switch to google pay - once I get a watch that supports it. Wonder if the new Wear OS3 will support it on newer Samsung watches. Will be watching their watch announcement next week.

I'll have to test out GP again. I was a strong advocate for it before I had a Samsung then I found MST and was hooked on SP. The fact that they discontinued MST was nearly a deal breaker for me with this device because it was a great feature. There are several places that wouldn't even try when I presented my phone for payment but almost always it worked with MST.

I have to disagree with whomever mentioned that in 2021 NFC is prolific enough that MST isn't a thing or needed. There is always going to be that little place you find or stop in that doesn't have NFC and you'll long for the old days. At least I know it happens to me.

I tried SP for the 1st time the other day and it didn't work. I used it all the time before. Does NFC auto turn on when you open it to use it? I tried swiping by the strip realizing no mst and the cashier held it at this other spot and it made a noise but I forget now the error I got. I may switch to Google Pay too I used to use it way back.

It must be coincidence I guess based on this, because I've never had it work if I didn't open the app first. I've had quite a few failures trying to use Google Pay..

If you have Samsung Pay setup on your phone too then it could be Samsung pay set as default and thats Google Pay won't work for you without opening app.

Google pay works for me every single time just by having home screen up and have my SP as backup.

Google Pay is the default. I haven't set up Samsung pay yet.

I didn't know with Google pay you don't have to open the app. I'm going to try Google Pay now that I'm getting the new Galaxy watch 4 I want to try Google pay. I opened it up on my app and it says upgrade to the new version but I haven't messed with it yet. I don't think I've ever paid with a watch before but I want to try it.

Back when I had HTC phones I used to Google pay occasionally. And then I always use Samsung pay until they took away the MST and I got the 21 ultra. I think I tried to use it once and it didn't work and my NFC may have been turned off. I don't remember. But it seems like I've only have to do is swipe your phone without opening Google pay I'm going to like it better. My husband uses it and says you can pay with it online a lot too.

I think I'll try it when my new watch arrives. I've used Samsung Pay for years, had MST on my old Gear S2 watch, but that went away when I upgraded to the Galaxy Watch.

I still have MST on my Note 20 Ultra, but it finally has become almost useless. Walmart is just about the last place without NFC, but they somehow block the MST payments.

I think the recent updates have improved things. Since my last post here I have used Google Pay several times without issue, and I did not have to open it first. I still generally unlock my phone first rather than use the shortcut I added to the lock screen. I need to try using that next time.

You still have to use biometrics or a PIN for GPay. Samsung is easier for me to use, since I don't use a "default" card. It's easier to just launch the app with a swipe, move to my card of choice, then pay. GPay, in this circumstance, is not nearly as convenient.
