as per this useful article, there are a number of Google apps that are less well known but are very useful:

https://www.computerworld.com/article/3161766/google-apps-android.html

interestingly, they are saying that the Google Phone app is far more useful than most stock phone apps.

i thought that i might ask the good folks here to see if anyone has experience with the Google Phone app and how it compares in real life use with the stock Samsung S22 Ultra phone app please?

thank you. look forward to hearing!

Had and used both - don't even notice a difference. They both
can look up contacts, dial and make calls. Don't know how much 'better' one can be than another.

Do you have an unlocked Samsung phone or one from a carrier?

I find that the Samsung phone app on my unlocked Samsung phone is better than the Samsung phone app on a phone I had previously from Verizon. Verizon limits the features such as the spam filter.

I've tried the Google Phone app and I very much prefer the Samsung stock app. I don't like that the number pad on Google phone app is an overlay covering half of the recent calls screen.

The one thing I miss about Samsung dialer is changeable call backgrounds. Thats about it.

Help! I just installed the Google Phone app from playstore to see if maybe it will give me some if the features that Verizon likes to block. But why do I not get an app icon for this phone app? I am unable to find it anywhere in my app drawer or on my home screens. How can I use it to make a phone call if there is no icon for me to select? Very strange.

I'd maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling from the Play Store. It should be a blue icon compared to the green Samsung dialer.

Thanks! I did try that and also tried restarting the phone but still no Google phone icon. Very strange. I have it set as my default phone app and my calls come in on that phone app and I can make phone calls by going into my recent apps to find it or opening the app from play store but no icon that I can put on my home screen.

Try opening your app drawer and then type 'phone' in the search bar.

From there you should be able to drag and drop the icon
OR
Press and hold the icon and then select 'show location' to have the UI show you where the app is.

Thank you! I was able to add it to my home screen by searching from my app drawer. I swear I had done this search before and came up with nothing. Interesting when I select "show location" it brings me to the app drawer but the icon does not exist in the app drawer.

So, is the Google phone better than the stock Samsung one?

Installed the Google Phone app and like it much better than the stock Samsung one. How do I get a Speakerphone icon to show up without hitting the phone button and selecting it from a drop-down menu? This part sucks.

So reading about the Google Phone App on their Store and looking at the screenshots...

I'm guessing being in the US, the option to record your calls will not be available on the dialer, correct?

And in the screenshot of Visual Voicemail, if your current Visual Voicemail app does not translate your message to text as shown, the Google Phone app will probably not do that either, correct?

And I am using an Unlocked S22U on AT&T that does not have either of the above mentioned available currently.

I'm running a pixel 3 XL, and my wife is using a Moto G6, both on AT&T, and both came with the Google phone app stock, and both are getting full visual voicemail features including the text transcriptions of our voicemails. And these are old phones

And we're not paying any extra for vvm. You should be getting it. I would try the Google phone app... what do you have to lose?

BTW I forgot to mention both our phones are factory unlocked.
