Google PICTURES vs. GALLERY, which is better?

Google PICTURES vs. GALLERY

Since going to 5.1.1 and blowing all the cache away on my Nexus 7 2013, the only available system app for looking at my extensive collection of pictures on the device is PICTURES, which I hate. However it just refuses to find any pictures taken prior to me installing 5.1.1, as if that was the start of time? I can't kick it into finding ALL the pictures in the various folders on my device.

I also can't find the old Gallery app anywhere to install.

NOTE...I specifically DO NOT WANT to sync these device pics with my existing Picasa accounts or anything like that. Strictly offline only.

Very frustrating, btw. I can't find any setting in PICTURES that tells it what directories to scan, etc.

Do I need to install a 3rd party app now to scan and pick up all the pictures?

I've been using Quickpic on all my devices and it works great - try it out.
