I came across a similar article to this earlier that just said Google was planning to ban sideloading apps. And then I just saw a post asking about sideloading which reminded me so I figured I would post here to see how others felt about it. The linked article mentions "very old apps" but the article I read earlier just said any app that the developer deemed should only be available from official sources.
Currently we get a warning saying that, you are about to download from an unknown source, this ban will make it impossible to load from anywhere other than the official source. Google is saying that developers will just need to check a box in their app submission to lock it to these official sources. I didn't see if this would be retroactive and affect older versions of the app. And of course it didn't mention rooting or rooted devices, since this technically is "forbidden" anyway. I'd say in this is one that would have affected me more in the past than in the present.
Android 14 can block users from sideloading very old apps
Android 14 code could block users from installing ancient apps, so long as phone makers use the feature.
