OK XDA have now rooted Fire HD has now been rooted and Play Store installed - Rooted Kindle Fire HD with working GAPPS and Play Store - xda-developers

How many of the Google Play apps will work with Amazon's forked version of Android?

It's a real hit or miss. Quite a few I have to end up side loading anyways though a big one, ADW launcher ex works on the kindle fire HD and can be downloaded from Google Play.

Still trying to figure out how to get Gtalk installed. So far maps, play store and youtube HD is up and running with the thread on xda.
