Google Play Services hammering the battery

Google Play Services is using a lot of battery juice... even more than the screen. I googled this, and I have set down my sync settings... i have 2 gmail accounts, syncing mail and contacts only. It did not help.

Right now, for example, in 2 hours since the phone was fully charged, it is down to 80%. Google Play Services have used 7% while the screen has used 4%.

Any other suggestions? it's exempt from optimization settings, so I can't do much about it.

Have you tried restarting the phone ?

That is way too much. Could you use Safe Mode the next time you reboot? Maybe some other app is forcing GP to or maybe just clear GP's cache.

I've noticed the same problem over the past two days and I'm not sure what's causing it. I haven't tried the safe mode start yet.

Factory reset is annoying but will probably fix it.

Before that nuclear option, I'd clear the cache in recovery.

Wipe cache partition:

1.Back up data on the internal memory. ...

2.Turn off the device.

3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.

4. Use the volume key to navigate to wipe cache partition.

5. Press the power button to select and then again to the prompt.
