Google play store continuously shows "download pending" but does not download

Whatsapp asks me to update, when I press the update icon, it directs to Google play store for installing, Upon pressing the install icon there it starts showing "download pending" continuously but does not download.

Are you sure it's not updating some other app? You can only get one update at a time - the requests are queued, so you could have 10 apps in the queue, and Whatsapp became number 11. It would just have to wait until Play gets to it.
