Google Play stuck 'Checking for updates'

I've just factory reset my mother's tablet (Hudl 2), set it back up again and now Google play is stuck at 'Checking for updates'. I have not installed any other apps yet & the internet connection is fine, I have also power cycled.

Play Store version is 7.9.80, compared to my Hudl 2 which works fine which is at 7.9.34

Any help appreciated.
