Any idea when this will be available for google messages? Imessage is looking pretty sweet these days :-

It depends on the carrier - they have to adopt the universal profile.

^ what they said. I have a 3XL running on Fi and already have it. Messages are different colors, read receipts, and seeing when someone is typing are about the only additional features right now.

Probably 2025 at the earliest at the rate they are going. (Place sarcasm emoji here)

Google is planning on rolling it out on their own because the carriers aren't doing it themselves. They've already started in the UK. I'm not sure if there's a timeline in the US or if they are having any pushback from carriers.

We've had RCS here in the UK now since about June. It works well but not a lot of people know about it.

It's main problem is you need either the Google Messages app or you're on a Samsung phone that supports it. A lot of people use different SMS apps so users are not as much as is required to make it worthwhile for constant use. Also... iPhone users get SMS messages so all in all.. WhatsApp and messenger are still the most used apps so you don't rack up MMS charges when want to share media.

RCS needs to be supported by all android third party sms apps firstly, for it to be as strong as iMessage. Also, Google really needs to get the message across i.e. every app must have a notification that lets the phone user know it now has WhatsApp like capabilities.

All that said.. it works really well bar a few bugs that they're steadily ironing out. I.e. It never loses connection anymore ..in my experience on my 1+6T.

Carriers haven't figure out a way to recover the revenue they lost from SMS. So, we probably will never see full adoption of RCS.

I've noticed that I can see when someone is typing ... I'm on Verizon and use the Verizon Messages app ... so I assume that's RCS?

Yes, Verizon is the only major carrier in US supports universal profile of RCS after Pixel 3 release.

I'm under the impression Verizon messages isn't universal profile RCS but their own version of RCS
