Is there any 3rd party app installed that mimics the Moto X's "always listening" feature? Something like that could probably keep the device awake by way of Google Search.

As far as I know, no. I turned off Google Now and have not seen search pop up. But I have never used Google Now on my tablet in the first place.

Maybe Google Search was churning on some old search, with a temporarily poor connection to the server. (It would eventually time out but maybe something was repeating it. Gremlins in the phone.)
