Google should just create a phone update site. Being that they give it away for free why not just let the consumer update their own phone. We do own our phones and it would not be breaking any contractual (I guess) agreement with phone companies, again since they give it away free. I would even be happy with a delayed release (lets say2-3 months after manufacturer gets it) and after that it should be a vanilla version capable phones. This would make manufacturer and phone companies put in the work needed to keep their bloatware updates on phones.

This is the holy grail of phone updating, but we'll never get it. Google doesn't make any of the hardware, so they wont take the time to write code to support the myriad number of different hardware configurations.

Maybe future generations of phones will be update-able like desktops and laptops, but I think we're a LONG way off from that...

Couldn't the hardware manufacturers simply release drivers for their radio, camera, SOC, etc, that are built into the AOSP, just like desktop OS environments?

Then charge me for it. Not sure about other people but I could also live with a $10 os upgrade if it were optional choice to do so.

No it all needs to ne tested and then field tested out in the field. It is a very long and hard process. I went through it my bb storm just a waiting game. Just glad I can customize my phone with roms. And don't need to wait for official leak
