Google screen search not working

When I set default app > device assistance app to Google and hold the home button down to activate, a circle appears without any logo and then nothing happens, no search. I have verified in Google settings that screen search is switched on as well.
As suggested elsewhere, I have cleared data and cache in the Google app. Not working.
