Google TV(Sony NSX-32GT1) won't update applications

My Sony NSX-32GT1 Google TV is terribly out of date, and many of my applications are threatening to stop functioning. After days of trying I FINALLY got an account added to it and FINALLY got on to the Google Play store. Problem is now nothing will download.

A bit after the TV boots up I'm told that Google Talk authentication failed - I assume this is relevant somehow, but have not found any way to fix it. I've tried rebooting, force stopping, clearing cache, clearing data, clicking this that and the other thing while making a modest but tasty snackrifice to the techno gods, but none of it is working, and I'm getting frustrated.

Further, when I attempt to download something (in this case, specifically trying to update Youtube) I get an error back: "Error retrieving information from server. [RPC:S-7:AEC-0 (.....)] The characters in the (....) are always different (last two sets were: R5DK-U3UF-D2LLC and SSAPB-IUJP-TH3Z4). After I get this error, the play store stops working, too and the TV begins to run very slow.

I'm not sure if this information is relevant, but just in case: In the Play Store, when I go to "My Apps" nothing ever loads. I tried logging in from my laptop to just push the updates that way, but supposedly I don't have any devices added, so that was a bust.

im having the same situation with my sony googlt tv box nsz-gs8... idk the error code but it gives me a error and same thing for the google talk thing

I have the Sony NSX32GT1 and talking with Sony today it sounds like this product is simply "too old" to receive any more support. Left a bad taste in my mouth. Certainly the last 'all in one' type device I will buy. TV's should simply be display device and then rely on an external source that can be updated (or upgraded) and maintained for a much longer time than just 3 years. I know times have changed but when I was a kid we would have our TV's for decades, literally.

Hey boys,,, i have the dame problem. The workaround of phones dont work....
Can You help me please.. I need updates apps in special YouTube

Was your unit upgraded to Android 3.2 back when it arrived ?

One thing for sure given how Google have announced Google TV dead with no compatibility path devised will not encourage commercial app vendors to spend efforts.

Products aspiring for an Android TV future requires Android 5 due to the way the new platform is architected.
An enthusiastic NSX-xxGT1 fan myself I agree the lack of vendor support for these amazing iconic products is not nice.

So we all pretty much know about the YouTube API change earlier this year. I'm still trying to figure out an alternative to that problem. Google has also prevented the continued use of most Google TV boxes and televisions. If you do a quick search you will undoubtedly see how many people can no longer use their Google TV devices after a hard reset. I found myself here after performing a reset to try and get more performance out of my device.

It seems that Google has blocked the activation of authentication for devices using older API's. You may also receive an email from Google when trying to sign-in to a freshly reset device, asking whether or not you would allow the device to run.

Problem:

What is happening is since our machines use an older "outdated" API Google is blocking authentication to these devices. You will know because it will tell you your password is wrong even when it is right. You simply have to access the email and "allow less secure devices"

Then after you successfully log-in to your device, you will find that you will not be able to download any apps. You will get an error similar to:

"Error retrieving information from server. [RPC:S-5:XXXXXXXXX]"

Below is a fix for these issues, should work on any Google TV box running Android 3.2 Honeycomb (API 13).

Needed:
Google Play Services 6.1.07 (1443915-038)
Google Play Store 5.8.11
I'm not sure if these files can be linked to on this forum, so the easiest thing to do is fire up Chrome on your Google TV device and search for these files.

Steps:
Download APKs
Go to Settings > Manage Applications > Check "Allow Unknown Sources"
Install APKs
Remove your Google account from Device
Reboot
Go to the play store and Sign-In
With these steps I have had an experience almost better than the original Play Store included with the 917 update. I hope you find this helpful.

Thanks so much for this fix! Worked great for me.

Thanks for the steps, but what experience do you have that's greater? Are you able to install apps like HBO Go, Showtime, AMC, and so on? Right now I'm just using the TV basically for a screen because I have an Amazon fire, but it would be great to have the Google Experience if it worked right.

You can get them for the apkmirror[DOT]com website (see above). Or just type the names and it will find them.

I just used bit ly to shorten the urls and then typed the shortened url into the Chrome Browser of my Google TV device. BTW, the downloaded apk files go to All apps -> Downloads.

BUT.... too bad it doesn't work in 2016!

The problem is caused by Google considering old versions of Play Services and/or Play Store to be "less secure apps".

So, whether you are using the Play Store version that shipped from the factory or the year-old versions posted above by patricki7, it will still fail to work, because Google considers them all to be "less secure apps".

To make it work, you have to go to myaccount[DOT]google[DOT]com (from your PC ONLY not from Google TV device), then "Account Preferences", "Sign-in & security", "Signing in to Google" then scroll down to the bottom, find "Allow less secure apps" and set it to ON.

Then I went to my Google TV device, to All Apps -> Settings -> Accounts and Sync and removed all google/gmail accounts. Then I rebooted, went to the PlayStore (factory version with no Play Services installed) logged-in to my gmail account and boom! I was able to update apps.

After you do that, you may want to try the versions of Play Store and Play Services posted by patricki7 above. Don't have a clue if the apps you 'll get will be different compared to Play Store factory version.

You know you are "in" the Play Store for good when, after you have logged-in and updated/downloaded an app, you go to your PC in the play store website and your device shows up under "compatible devices". For example if YouTube for GoogleTV shows up as "compatible with some devices", you are good. It means the Play Store sees your Google TV device.

If I helped, please reply with SOLVED.

Not that you will be able to do anything useful in the Play Store. I only wanted the ability to update apps from the Play Store because I wanted to update YouTube for Google TV, so that it doesn't fire network errors. Turns out the updated version (the one with the blue background) is nothing more than a wrapper around Chrome, basically a simple website. Which means no 1080p or even 720p. With the exception of Plex and two other media players, there are simply no good apps for Google TV. Combined with the fact no version of XBMC/Kodi works on the damn thing, it's the single most useless set top box and single most useless Android device I currently own. Too bad... I really wanted to use the keyboard-remote thing on Kodi... Now I understand why the ebay seller had no problem selling it for only 23 GBP...

You are a lifesaver thank you so much able to update now!!

My solution to this issue was to purchase the Amazon Firestick. I have all updated apps (the sony remote operates the firestick :)

It's way worth the $39 to actually have REAL updated apps.

So my "Smart" tv is now a dumb tv with a firestick ;)

I honestly HOPE i don't get burned on the new Sony Android TV i bought. I'm already disappointed because it's still on Marshmallow
