Google+ Using Huge Background Data

For me it happened during the day. 250 MB of data usage and auto photo and video backup was on data only + while charging!!!
What I though was the bug is that the transfer of my videos started on the WiFi before I left the job and then switched to data on my way to home.
Maybe for those who got an issue at night it's because they have WiFi problem. Maybe it connects and disconnect and that would be the same issue as me.
Google+ should pause the download and resume it when a internet switch from WiFi to mobile data and come back to WiFi if I describe the issue correctly.

G+, yesterday, chewed through 1.6Gb of my 2.0Gb a month data plan in about 30 minutes. No idea why. I did have auto-backup on but definitely set to wi-fi- only and there was no new content to back up anyway. I don't even use G+ much, I am now SO far past done with it, disabled both it's background data and the app itself.

Wow,I just got hammered with data used!! Google plus used all my high speed data.. Might be a tmobile trick to get you to pay for unlimited!!

was searching the net for the answer and it looks like I'm not alone. Google Plus used 3 gigs of data in 2 days. I just ended up turning off background data in hopes that will work

June 21st, Verizon, Samsung Note 3, same thing happened to me today. All my data plan used my Google+ which is an application I know nothing about and never asked for or signed up for. When I called Verizon they said call Google and that at some point I had agreed to many, many pages of Google+ requirements in one of those click to agree screens. I had a similar problem last month and had turned off all mobile data functions I thought. Might there have been an update that turned Google + back on? Also I checked Google + and see no new photos there. One folder of pictures is there from two years ago but nothing new. I have deleted my Google + account online and now am looking to delete it from the phone.

Had the exact same issue last week. I am sure it us Photos Auto backup as I had turned it on (set to Wi-Fi only) a few days before. Only difference I had was my Wi-Fi was turned off over night so it is interesting to see its happening even with Wi-Fi on.

I copped $200+ excess data fees as it did 1.57 gig while I was asleep. I reported this issue to Google who are going to look into it.

Hi Ken. Did you have any luck with Verizon crediting the crazy data explosion? I had the same problem yesterday with 3GB of data hitting with Google+

I want to get Verizon to credit it too.

Had the same issue last night, 700M of mobile usage even with wifi and charging only settings on. Does anyone knows if disabling the "auto Awsome" feature works or do we have to set the background usage to "off"? I really like the auto backup feature (because of the Google+" Story " feature, which is neat).
Cheers

I think I can top everyone. I have a Samasung Galaxy Note2 and over the past 4 days Google+ has used almost 10gb of data, my limit. I didn't know it until I received several text messages informing me that I was approaching my limit. AT&T couldn't figure out the problem so I turned off my mobile data and installed My Data Manager and after just 6 hours on WiFi I used almost 6gb. The culprit - Google+. Until I can figure out why I removed it from my phone. I recently joined several communities and think the problem is with Android Authority. I say this because I get more notifications from them than all others combined. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I turned off background data and now I can still use the auto backup feature when in wifi. While I don't use the social network the stories it creates automatically is a nice feature

Hmm. I'm not alone it seems. My phone used up 3gb of data (S4) until it automatically switched mobile data off (fortunately I had set the limit myself so this happened before a breached my limit. Of course I can't use mobile data at all now... Like everyone else I have backup only over Wifi, all the correct settings, so why is Google+ doing it over the mobile network?

My biggest concern is that it will do this when I'm out of the country and I will find I've used 10gb and have some massive bill.

Is this some sort of scam between Google and the mobile phone operators? Has anyone had any luck with talking to Google about this? Maybe someone should sue Google....

Just disable background data on this particular app. It won't trouble you again.

I have the same issue with my Note 4. Google+ is using 104GB of background data and so far I've used 91.4GB of data. I have unlimited 4G internet with T-Mobile so no worries but that's still insane.

I just had a similar issue occur with the google search app. It randomly used .68gb of background data in a few minutes. Not sure what the deal was. I have now cut off background data with most of my apps. I just updated to 5.0 on the Moto X. Not sure if there is some bug that caused it from that, or not. Luckily it didn't put me over my data limit.

I would double check to make sure you do in fact have it set to sync while on WiFi only. There really shouldn't be anything else consuming that much data (that I can think of) related to Google Plus.

Thanks for that tip. I've been having the same issue and I just found I've stupidly had it set to 3g sync. Oh god the excess data charges I've incurred this month.

Yes, Google + is stupid it consumed more than 800 mb on 3G postpaid on my mobile, why google make this stupid app ... Google can never beat face book so close this stupid app

I just joined androidcentral to say, Yeah, this is still happening. Just this morning it ran up 512mb of data. I have WiFi on all the time whilst at home and at work. According to MyDataManager (app) it started using WiFi about 3am at about 770MB. then when I left for work around 7 it used 544MB of mobile data.
I have noticed that the settings do not seem to stick. Half the time when I check on it the auto-backup will be disabled and the account to use will be blank. Backup will also change itself back to Wifi & mobile network as well as Video Backup doing likewise.
I change the settings back to: backup=on, account=(my gmail), Back up photos=Over WiFi only, Back up videos=Over WiFi only; then exit the settings. When I go back to the settings they change back to the defaults. Sometimes the backup and sync will stay 'on' though, but the back up settings change to wifi or mobile.
I rememer this happening a long time ago and that's why I uninstalled it then. Unfortunately I had forgotten about that and installed this a few days ago. Google Photos is by far the worst app I have ever had on my phone because it costs me so much money. I sincerely wish Google would either stop ignoring years of bug reports and fix this or just set it on fire and burn it.

Just wanted to chime in a thought. I found this thread when I was experiencing a similar issue. I just activate project fi service (my first time on a metered data service) and the day after activating hit my 2gb budget. It was all caused by 'google photos' app. After doing some tests I'm pretty sure it's caused, at least in my case, by using Photos as the daydream app. It seems to be related to this issue logged against google+ a while back: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=52815

I might be wrong but it looks similar to some of your issues.

I just had the same problem, so I downloaded the "AutoSync Free" app.
It turns on "Sync" automatically based on your preferences. I selected "Turn on sync only when charging and connected to wifi. This worked like a charm, saved me a lot of data and also A LOT of battery.

I just disabled google+ on my LG Ultimate 2 because it uses 2.8GB of my 5GB storage on the phone. It moved me from version 9.xx to version 4.3.1.xxx. I wonder if I will miss anything.....
