Does anyone know how reliable Google voice calling in hangouts is? Could it effectively replace a cellular plan?

The biggest problem is MMS. Some carriers and ROMs, like ATT, convert long SMS to MMS. Years ago the love of my life broke up with me. A few weeks later she sent me a long text wanting to get back together, but I never received it because she sent it to my google voice number and it was longer than 450 characters (3 text messages). She used ATT and it converted it to MMS. Wasn't even notified it was sent, she thought I had moved on and was ignoring her, and that was it.

Yes, the MMS limitations are pretty significant for me, and unless and until there's full MMS support, I probably couldn't fully switch to GV. That said, I'm encouraged that they do seem to be making incremental progress - it looks like MMS messages sent to VZ (and possibly AT&T?) will show up as links for the recipient.

She couldn't go old school and call you? Damn text messages ruining lives...

For voice calls, yes. For me it is every bit as useful as a real phone. The catch is that you need a wifi signal for it to work. I can use my tablet like a phone now.

For SMS/MMS...too early to tell. I don't think it's mature yet.
