google voice & texting question

I was wondering if some of you folks can enlighten me on google voice and sms.

on verizon, i have 250 txt per billing cycle. I've been texting friends and family, using what I thought to be via google voice, but today I checked my text usage and it is up to 241.

Here's how I've been doing my texting ...

open up google voice, select a person I want to text and send my text message.

When I do this, does it eat up my verizon text msg?

When someone respond to my text, instead of using google voice, i'm using the message application that is in the dock tray.

Does this go against my verizon text msg count?

If I'm doing it all wrong, please advise on how I can use google voice to send out sms so that it DOESN'T count against my verizon 250 txt msg limit.

thanks.

Use the Google voice app. You need a data connection to be able to text. When using the messaging app it will send through verizons network instead of over data.
If u notice the number that the text is comming from is not your friends number but a gv assigned number. Its is sending a text through that number because then it will appear as your Google voice number on our friends phone

when i'm in the messaging app that came w/ the phone, it show a 8162007120 number, i'm assuming that's the google's routing number or what not.

so basically texting outside of the google voice app will incurr a text charge to my over all 250 monthly text msg w/ verizon?

That is how I understand how it works.

I believe you can shut down your text messaging plan entirely so you literally can't send or receive texts period. That will ensure you won't get charged. And just do everything through voice.

Unfortunately I can't do the just yet as Google voice can't send mms. My parents send me stuff via mms and they don't have a data plan.

It seems to me like you're receiving the replies on your regular sms app.

Go on the google voice website with your PC, then settings.

Make sure that "receive text messages on this phone" is unchecked.
