Google Voice Visual VoiceMail

I have visual voice mail and it works good. I am just now finding out about google voice and I am setting it up now. However, if I do not like it (I'm sure I will) How do I stop forwarding the calls to my google voice and just use visual voice mail?

you need to forward your voicemail to your GOOGLE voice account.

To set this up, you need to setup a ?Number Busy/No Answer Call? forwarding by following these steps:

Dial the following:

*71 [Your GV #] then hit Send ? (*71-###-###-#### then Send)

that way instead of verizon vm picking up it will send the call to your google voice account.

Problem with this step: all my phone does when I hit "Call" is pop up a little note "Call not sent." It will not work. Am I missing another step?

I set up GV on my Thunderbolt and got the whole "Your carrier is a dork and won't allow you to do voicemail your own way" nonsense, and even set my Verizon number on my GV account via my pc.

When you get the "carrier does not support autoconfiguration" on the Google Voice website, GV will present you with a number it is asking you to "call" from your phone. When you click "OK", Google Voice assumes you have placed this "call" (because it has no way of knowing that you have not).

So go to voice.google.com and log in, then click on your phone number in the upper-right, find your Android phone on the list and click the "activate Google Voice on this phone" link. Read the page that comes up really carefully, because the web page cannot do the change for you and is instead giving you a set of instructions to follow to set it up yourself.

PS: Yes, it really is as simple as calling *71 + your GV number + SEND for Verizon. But it varies based on Carrier (AT&T has a different set of instructions, for example, and also does not support auto-configure) so always go with what the Google Voice web site tells you to do.

Google should have shown you a "did you encounter an error" link just above the "done" button. Here's a link to the diagnosis page in case it helps.

Be sure that you are dialing the number exactly as shown. If my Google Voice number is 4442223333, then I would dial:
*714442223333 [SEND]

Don't forget to dial the leading asterisk/star, it's important.

If you are dialing precisely STAR + 71 + your 10-digit Google Voice Number and hitting SEND, and you are still encountering an error in the call, then you'll probably need to call Verizon.

*71 is simply Verizon's "busy/no answer call forwarding" feature, nothing more nothing less. It's a base feature of your Verizon line. All Google is doing is giving you detailed instructions on how to use it (*71 + number to forward missed calls to).

Contacting VZW to see what's up. My plan already includes call forwarding and everything is set up correctly w/Google Voice. So we shall see.

I don't know what I did, but from June of 2011 until last week, I wasn't getting my voicemail transcribed for me and sent to my Google mail. I went into Google Voice account on the web and picked some setting (sorry, I can't remember which ones), and the next call I got......transcribing was working and it has every since.

I may just look at the website to see if I remember that I did.
