Hi

I'm sorry if this has been asked already..I did a search but Google and Voicemail are pretty common terms and I didn't see anything thru a search.

Can anyone explain to this idiot how to get Google Voice Visual Voicemail working? I'm coming from a Nexus One and it just automatically configured it with the press of a couple buttons...but with the Thunderbolt it keeps telling me the carrier has blocked auto configuration. I think I've followed the manual instruction correctly but whenever I dial my number it still keeps connecting to Verizon voicemail. Are they blocking GV visual voice, or am I just screwing this up somehow? I've got Google Voice texting working perfectly...just cannot seem to get the VVM working.

Thanks!

Ignore the part about it not working with the carrier. Just choose Google voice as voicemail and it should work fine. That's what I did on my dinc and tb and they both work fine.

Install Google voice and follow the prompts. To ensure open settings, call, and then voicemail provider. Try this and get back to me.

See that's what's weird...I did go ahead and ignore it and it *appeared* to go ahead and set it up...GV was listed as my voicemail service in settings, etc..,...yet it still defaults to Verizon.

Thanks for your response...this is driving me nuts...it's basically the only thing I don't have working yet :D

you need to forward your voicemail to your GOOGLE voice account.

To set this up, you need to setup a ?Number Busy/No Answer Call? forwarding by following these steps:

Dial the following:

*71 [Your GV #] then hit Send ? (*71-###-###-#### then Send)

that way instead of verizon vm picking up it will send the call to your google voice account.

Okay guys thanks for all the responses...I just read them all and will follow instructions and post back. I just hope that at this point I haven't messed up. I went to the PC Google Voice account and started fiddling with my forwarding number. i think I put it all back the way it was :D

Among the many crappy apps Verizon installs on the phone, they have a "Visual Voice Mail" one, anybody tried it yet? I know on my blackberry this app cost extra ($$$), is that the case with the TB? Is it worth a try?

Yeah I started a "dry run" with that app to see what would happen...they want $2.99 a month for it's use :O

Google Voice is the better option...by far :) For a one time fee of $2.99, it would have been okay I suppose. They want 36 bucks a year!!

Dito. Verizon again string to charge for what Google does for free, just like VZ Navigator. Google voice works great, btw. As long as the person does not have a heavy acent, it is very accurate on visual Voicemail.

the only thing with using google voice, if you use the service to forward to multiple phones you lose that feature. My understanding is that you get that or you get the voicemail, atleast thats how it worked when i set it up on my original droid when that first came out. I took it off so I could use my google voice number to forward calls to my house and cell #.

this won't be popular but my honest feeling is this: if there are people out there with so much money that they can throw it away on visual voicemail, Verizon might as well take advantage and collect some easy money. They're running a business after all and maybe those people are the ones helping to build the LTE network :D
