The main value add feature is that if you use Google Voice, you can send/receive texts on your computer (voice.google.com) as well as on your phone. You can start conversations on either and continue on the other seamlessly.

Likewise for calling, if you use Google Voice, you can track your call history on the computer, make phone calls from within gmail, listen to voicemails online.
