US only for now but supposed to start expanding Monday. You will have to download the app.
From what I've read and with querying Gemini itself, Assistant will still handle a lot of what it does now. It'll be a gradual move over.

It's not true that you can't use both: there is a setting for Assistant "Choose your digital assistant from Google" that lets you choose one or the other as default. If you choose Assistant, you can have working icons for both Assistant and Gemini.
