My jaw just hit the floor today, if these leaks turn out to be true. For those who don't want to read the full story here's some clips followed by my thoughts on it:

Imagine a world where you buy your smartphone first and then pick your wireless carrier. Picture a fantasy land where you can customize your phone?s hardware to your liking, similar to how Dell or Lenovo lets you build a PC. You can laugh and say I?m full of it, but I?m here to tell you this could be reality sooner than you think.

According to several anonymous sources within Motorola, the ?X Phone? project is real, and the first retail device will go on sale this summer. Our original source said the first ?X Phone? product might ship in June, but another fact checker tells us the target date is the end of July.

This is serious. Nobody has done this on android let alone Apple, MS or Blackberry. Order your phone, custom built to specification by you? Holy crap! I just had a nerdgasm when I read this!

Google is not focused on specs or software gimmicks (like Samsung) for their upcoming products. Instead they want to produce an ultra-affordable mobile device that connects to a bunch of wearable accessories they plan to release later this year. Google Glass and Google Watch are two examples of these accessories, and we are told more are in the works.
And when I say ?ultra-affordable? mobile device, I?m talking a starting retail price of $199 or less. Google and Motorola will sell smartphones for the same prices that people are willing to pay for today?s flagships, but these devices won?t be tied to a two year contract.

Multiple nerdgasms. Google's flexing their considerable muscle here by subsidizing the phones themselves rather than the carrier. What does this mean for us? To sum up what I read there as well as some other articles about this, is that you could possibly buy this straight from Play Store this summer, choose your specs and hardware like you can currently do with PC's that you buy online, and receive your phone at reduced cost without carrier bloatware, carrier unlocked right out of the box, (both of which could possibly mean carrier-free updates) and at costs far below what you would pay for a similar phone from a carrier for a Samsung, HTC, Sony, etc. That's... mind blowing to say the least.

There of course will be other features as well I haven't listed but are talked about in the article, such as a tablet lineup to match, and this is basically the first of a wave of leaks, there will be more to come leading up to Google I/O in May. The first thing that occurred to me was, How might Google pull this off and make this a carrier-free world phone without the X Phone being non-LTE like the Nexus 4 ? Good news which I suspect might just tie into this if not the first batch but the next: Qualcomm outs global LTE chip, claims a world first Hardware made with the RF360 isn't expected to arrive on shelves until the latter half of 2013 which places it damn near the X Phone release dates.

In my not so humble opinion this is going to blow the doors off of the whole smartphone industry, including Apple's iPhone. AC, how did you guys miss this?

This is one thing that people need to understand about the Nexus 4. Google is very much subsidizing the cost of their devices. That's why you see the price so low on the Google Play store. When you see full-retail on other phones, that's factoring in a lot of overhead for those OEMs. T-Mobile and other outlets aren't making off like bandits selling the Nexus 4 for over $500 with no contract.

In other words, the Nexus 4 pricing on Google Play isn't normal cell phone pricing right now.

AC has their sources. Like with reviews, AC doesn't strive to be first with rumors. I'd rather AC be right than wrong.

Oh and isn't that the same site that got burned with the Android 4.2 rumors? Project Roadrunner anyone? lol.

I've been checking my inside sources (yes, I have sources too - no they're not store reps, yes they are employed by various OEMs) and rumors are rumors. ;)

I'm going to be watching this with optimism, there's quite a few separate sources reporting on this that have proven reliable in the past. I think this one is going to play out, and if not could very well end up being a self fulfilling prophecy.

Some sites had more details posted which were quickly mysteriously pulled all at once so it's not far fetched to say that an irate Google may have gotten involved with that happening.

Wow, this sounds incredible. Google about to sell subsidized phones?

I thought it was great that they sold the nexus 4 at cost, but going a step further and subsidizing?

sent from the best smart phone (not phablet) on the worst network- the galaxy S III unfortunately on T-Mobile

One of the sources seems to think that the Nexus 4 was planned to set the stage for this. If you really think about it, this is a very sensible and logical next step in evolution for Google to take the next step and blow everyone away this year. I can totally see these leaks being true, and it sounds like something they could easily pull off. They've kept hinting that this X project is going to be a complete game changer so there's no way this is just going to end up being just another set of specs or UI gimmicks.

See what you've done to me?

So maybe I should just hold on to my Gnex for a little longer. Forget the s4 or the HTC ONE

That's my plan. Both of those phones underwhelmed me. Nothing but more touchwiz and sense gimmicks of mediocre usefulness and a spec update.

We didn't miss it :)

Scooped again, Jerry! :p
Motorola advisor (and former Apple evangelist) Guy Kawasaki posed an interesting question recently via Google+: ?Wouldn?t it be great if you could personalize your phone like this?? The this of his question referred to a video clip highlighting Porsche Exclusive, the auto makers offering allow for buyers to create a completely custom vehicle, from paint job to stereo and more.

So what does this have to do with Android and rumors of the X Phone? You might recall a report from last week detailing how Moto will approach the brand. It was said that Motorola and Google will offer buyers the option to customize different aspects of their new handset at time of purchase, including RAM, storage size, and color. The idea would be akin to the sort of upgrades offered when buying a PC or laptop.

Is Kawasaki?s post a hint at what we can expect when the X Phone is unveiled later this year? It seems more than coincidence based on the recent speculation. It would certainly add an interesting twist to smartphone buying, treating the devices more like the mini personal computers they really are and less like the mobile phones they started as

Did you see what Kawasaki posted? It's about custom colors and fabrics. Think more colors, or removable backplates.
Stop thinking custom CPUs or adding RAM.

Damn. Sounds more realistic though. Easier to swap back plates than to build twenty different hardware variations. Liked the idea of having different screens and what not to pick from though. Day ruined
