Gorilla Glass? Is a screen protector necessary?

Has it been confirmed that the X uses the same Gorilla Glass as the Droid? I have not used a protector on my Droid at all and it is still pristine (got it on launch day.) However I think that perhaps, with the size of this screen, I might try the anti-glare protectors from Verizon, not for scratches, but for... well, anti-glare, and fingerprint smudges.

Yeah do we really need screen protectors for scratches on the X?

It has been confirmed. Sorry I don't have any links but I am 98% positive it does have the gorilla glass. Still in my opinion it is a good idea to get a screen protector. The iphone also has gorilla glass, and I know plenty of iphones out there that still could be scratched.

Yes, it has been confirmed by boygeniusreport who contacted Verizon.

Still waiting for someone to tell me why they need a screen protector. Do you guys work in construction or something? Or are you the types of people that use screen savers on your LCD monitors? It's not necessary.

I am an architect by day so I am in the field a lot, measuring, etc.

Mainly though because I scratched the heck out of my old Treo 650 when I had keys in my pocket.

Peace of mind? I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old and as much as I try to keep things from them...it happens. I also toss my phone in my diaperbag when I am out which means it is in there with toys, keys, etc.

for me.....it's because I put my phone in my pocket......the same pocket as my keys and change. Wallet goes in the other pocket. On my previous phone(Storm 1), I used screen protectors for a while and then went naked as I read so much about the screen being very scratch resistant, etc. Well.......the screen had lots of scratches and nicks by the end of its service use (last week.)

So, with the DX, I bought the VZW anti-glare protectors.....immediately,I was pissed as I realized that it didn't cover the entire glass...only the lit portion of the glass. Also, the anti-glare cuts down on the true beauty of the screen. The a-g protectors do feel nice though. sliding and swyping is perfect...very smooth. Also, it doesn't show any face grease or fingerprints! that's nice. Even still, I'm not happy with the VZW a-g protectors. the first one lasted me about 10 minutes before I took it off and threw it away; i hated the way the screen looked with the A-G on it...andthe lack of dull coverage. 2 days later, I changed my tune as I was paranoid about scratching the beautiful display. I have had the a-g on there ever since and have really gotten used to it. I do hope they come out with full glass coverage though.....soon!

This is such a hard decision for me...uggg....I will need all you guys' help. I will pretty much have my phone on my scrub pocket, separated from my pens and calipers. I will have some kind of case on it but what would be the best screen protector for my kind of work? I am still debating whether to have full body ghost armor or a case and screen protector....

I got a package of the VZW protectors that came with the car dock/charger bundle. They are obviously foggy before you apply them and IMO degrade the appearance of the screen to an unacceptable level, so I peeled it off. If I try another one it will likely be the Steinheil Crystal, but I'm wondering if it's really necessary for scratch protection under normal use with the Gorilla Glass screen. Has anyone had issues with scratches from normal pocket/purse use with one of these screens? No screen protector is going to help prevent breakage, and if you decide to take a Dremel to it or sand blast it I'm sure you can damage it (and anything you have covering it). Most of the cases are going to provide some clearance between the screen and a hard surface you lay the phone on, so I'm somewhat conflicted about the need for a plastic screen cover over Gorilla Glass: YouTube - Corning at SID: Corning® Gorilla® Glass Scratch Test

I know the threads a bit old, but want to chime in. I too started with the VZW anti-glare protector and hated it. I did love the way it felt, but couldn't stand how bad it made the screen look. Took it off, fell in love with the true look of the screen (note: hating the feel but dealing with that) and just today I looked at my screen, boom a 1mm long scratch on the surface of the screen. Hardly noticeable unless you looked for it or lighting was working against you but its there and now that I know its there it sure as hell annoys me.

Lesson learned: if you have OCD with keeping your screen scratch proof keep that protector on. If you don't care too much about some scratches here and there go naked and enjoy the beautiful display.

I personally am very sad about this scratch as I by no means am really putting my phone in harms way. Ie - I don't work in construction and I have a waist holster (the thick as life VZW one) and if the phone isn't in my hands its in that holster. So pretty sad that this happened to me. Just thought you guys deserved a heads up on this as even though it sure as heck is resistant to scratch, it isn't immune.

Almost makes me want to put on a screen protector... almost..

Personally i love the way my DX feels naked, i did order a skin case though to protect it from impact if i drop the phone. But i just love the way the screen feels and looks naked

I have some friends who have iPhones, 2 of them do have scratched screens.

One is femal that dumps the phone in her purse, the other is her anal retentive husband that swears he has never had his keys in the same pocket as the phone yet has a 1 inch scratch running from the top right corner down towards the screen.

I dont know if the iTouch 2nd gen is gorilla glass, but me and the wife both have scratches on ours.

I just put the Steinheil Ultra Crystal protector on mine and am very pleased with the result. It is so clear that it's really hard to tell there's a protector on it at all and I think it's smoother than the glass.
