Got a question about wifi?

Hello new here think i'm going to be picking up a android of some time in about a month or two. Can't really decide what i want think i want a unlock/any carrier phone any suggestions would be helpful I'm a Linux geek so the more unlocked/hackable the better..

Anyway the real reason i wrote this can you use the wifi to browse the web with out any carrier service? Just say i'm at home or work (mc.d's starbucks etc etc..) and i got a wifi network and i want to get online? will it work with out paying the 30-35 bucks a month for mobile service?

Yup.

Unlocked doesn't mean "any carrier". It means "any GSM carrier that the phone has the right bands for".
