Got a strange popup in Gmail - was this malware?

Today I opened an email in Gmail that I received from eBay. I clicked on a link in the email to go to a list of auctions, and the browser (Chrome, I assume) took me there as usual.

But when I clicked on a link within an eBay auction page, I got one of those scam popups for appple .com (three Ps). I didn't click the popup, but I've never had that happen on my phone before, and the weird thing is that no scan (Norton, AVG, Hi Security) found malware.

The problem persisted until I force stopped Chrome and tried again. Now there is no popup when I click the same links through the same email.

I don't think this was a coincidence, but I downloaded the Ghostery browser last night and immediately had a "you have won!" scam popup with it. But I didn't click the popup of course and uninstalled the app right then. I got it from Google Play so I thought it was safe.

Can I assume the issue is resolved? Was it malware, and does this happen often with Google Play? Please help me understand what happened. Thank you.

Do you still have that email? If so, forward it to eBay: ebay.com/help/account/protecting-account/recognising-spoof-emails?id=4195 (sorry for the non-link -- when I try to paste the entire URL with https://, it converts to an annoyingly long URL that starts with forums.androidcentral.com).

I agree, the actual eBay site should never serve up browser popup ads like that. As long as you didn't tap any links in that popup, you're probably fine, but watch out for more popups.
