Got my Edge - Quick Impressions...

I have seen the "cell standby" problem, that's related to wifi? I haven't tried turning wifi off. Can you tell me more about this wifi bug?

The WiFi bug is causing very high Cell Standby numbers which are draining the battery on Standby and, likely, causing the phone to heat up doing nothing. I'm seeing up to 5% drain per hour on WiFi with the phone in Standby (not even touched).

iPhone 6 Plus and Lumia 1520 are maybe 1% per hour battery drain, at worst, on WiFi. Usually less than that - my 6 Plus can be unplugged all night and maybe be down 1% when I wake up in the morning.

The extra S6 drain really adds up when you pull the phone out of your pocket a few hours later and you are down a significant percentage without even using it.

The fact that people are getting 3-4 hours of SOT when they are losing so much battery while in standby is pretty impressive. Now just imagine when they get this issue fixed, we could be seeing over 5 hours of SOT.

I like your math:cool:

I like your math:cool:

I've seen people say they are losing about 3% per hour or more in standby. Over a full day, people probably have 12 hours of standby time. 36% of battery is being used in standby and only 64% of the battery is putting out 3-4 hours of SOT. If they can fix the issue and get it down to 1% drain per hour standby, that's 24% battery left that can be used by the screen, which should be about another 1.5 hours.

There's my math based off of made up numbers...but it kind of makes sense, right?

If somebody with the phone can give me some actual numbers, we can figure this out!

I've had the S6 since Monday and seem to average 4-5% battery drain per hour in Standby on WiFi with that high Cell Standby (which averages between 15-25%). It's been pretty consistent since my first day despite the system "settling in" and me doing a Factory Reset.

If I turn off WiFi (which I need) Standby drain decreases dramatically to 1-2% per hour which is perfectly reasonable (Of course, iPhone 6 Plus battery drain on WiFi in Standby mode is 1-2% for the entire time I sleep (not per hour) but I've given up any hope that Google's power hungry system can get anywhere near that).

GSAM Battery Monitor says I average 3 hours SOT if I drain to 0 which seems about right but I never let it drain that low so I'm realistically getting 2.5 hours SOT now because I have to save a little "juice" for the end of my day in case I need the phone.

I'm convinced that if they can fix the Standby battery drain, you guys are right and it should result in 5 hours+ SOT. I just hope it's soon!

Even my moto x pure version with lollipop was like this on standby. Perhaps lollipop 5.1.1 will fix it

Problem is I need WiFi. I'm on Tmobile and I live in the mountains with no Tmobile signal. I use WiFi calling to live literally.
This is just one of this obvious issues and differences between IOS and android devices that always annoyed me . Having to be engineers and technicians just to figure out what's causing our phones to not work normally out of the box when the companies themselves should of done this before releasing the product.

I love my edge. I'm just saying. It gets old

I posted this here and haven't received too much response about it, and also posted it now over the regular S6 forum but posting it here just in case Edge people don't go there.

Reading over XDA forums, it seems that there someone posted the same and people followed the suggestions and most, if not all people that have disabled VoLTE have managed to get rid of the Cell Standby drain, together with disabling Smart Network and Scanning Always Available on the Wifi settings (2 things totally unnecessary and on by default). I know that as soon as I get my Edge on Friday these are the first things I'd disable, but any of you having the same issue can do this now and let us know here if it also worked for you.

If it's VoLTE bug, will be easier to fix as this will be something carrier specific, so it's T-Mobile to be blamed, and also will allow you to keep using your Wifi Calling without issues, so try to see if disabling VoLTE and re-enabling Wifi calling when you need it works better for you and finally get rid of the Cell Standby Drain bug.

One more thing that I forgot to add in the previous post, according to GSMArena, the Edge features, Night Clock and People Edge are mainly responsible for a huge part of the battery drain, specially on the Standby mode, as it must leave both features always on waiting for any gesture or showing information on the Edge.

So if you are not going to use any or both of this features, turn them off and it will help you a lot with your battery life. Take a look at the article here.

It's just me but I'd hold out judgement and frustration until April 10th when the phone is officially released. If an update isn't pushed out by then, then be mad. Until then just be happy that you are in the extreme minority that are getting to use an awesome product that isn't released yet.

I wish I could have an S6 with poor battery life right now instead of my S3.

Ok...you may be onto something here. I decided last night on my own to disable all of the edge features and took the phone off the charger this morning and tested the S6 on Standby mode with almost no use, so good to know others are trying other similar things.

Battery drain in Standby was fantastic (just a bit over 1% per hour on WiFi). With the edge features off the horrendous Cell Standby drain and Android OS drain magically went away. Hopefully it can hold!!!

Will also try your other suggestions from XDA regarding VoLTE, and the WiFi scanning to see if this all can hold but I'm hopeful that Google or T-Mobile can figure this out fast because when the Standby drain goes away, the phone is just fantastic!

Ok...it didn't go as I had hoped...the first 4 hours were terrific per the above screenshot. Nominal Cell Standby battery drain with Edge features turned off. WiFi on all day.

I then turned off VoLTE and WiFi scanning features for the rest of the day and my battery drain slowly crept back to where I've been all week - roughly 5% per hour in Standby. Not related to turning them off but they clearly didn't solve whatever problem is going on with the phone. Cell Standby was climbing all day and finished the day at an astonishing 38% with my phone getting warm during periods of the day without being used.

Overall, I was able to get 2 hrs 46 minutes of SOT and 13.5 hours total off the charger with 28% remaining so if I had gone down to 10%, it looks like I would have ended up somewhere around 3.5 hours SOT with the rest in Standby - not anywhere near where it should be (but my best all week due to a battery sipping first 4 hours on Standby).

The day started off so promising with only 1% per hour battery drain in Standby but then something happened internally to kickstart that dreaded Cell Standby battery drain for most of the rest of the day which warmed up the phone and beat up the battery. Google appears to be the only hope to solve this with a software fix because I've now tried all suggestions but the only thing that worked so far was to turn off WiFi entirely which brought battery drain back in line to 1% per hour.

I received my Edge and returned it the next day. It's hard to hold to say the least. And while holding it in one hand while typing with the other, the hand that holds it seems to touch the curved screen and the phone responds to that. They are sending me the "regular" S6.

Got my S6 edge yesterday. The build is beautiful. I was worried after messing around with a couple that when I received it, it would feel awkward in my hand. I was pleasantly surprised. The screen is crazy good. And I'm not upset with the edge at all. I thought that it may cause a lot of glare or image distortion but I haven't noticed any yet.

The initial set up caused the device to get really hot as previously mentioned by others. It was almost too hot to touch, but it was downloading a ton at once, both apps from the play store and via smart switch.

Charging is super quick! And I love how it shows how much anticipated time left until it's done, a small feature that can mean a lot.

I'm still getting used to the curve on the screen while typing or swyping. Sometimes my thumbs feel like they're tip toeing on the edge of a cliff. But I haven't been having much of a problem.

Battery life, I'm not finding to be an issue either as others were. I left it to charge to 100% last night at around 1 am... Took it off and had it on do not disturb mode. When I woke up in the morning it was only down to 97%. I took it to work with me and used it sporadically through the day, for a few calls, a fleet of texts, viewed some emails, some Facebook, sync my gear neo, a game or two, and mainly to listen to power amp on my 30 minute commute. Right now at 6:06pm it's only down to 46%. I've had wifi and Bluetooth on all day to connect to my gear neo. I do use power saving mode and keep the screen around 35 to 40% brightness.

I also just received in the mail my Spigen [Resilient] case from Amazon for $11.99 and it's sweet! Give it a good tack in hand and looks stealthy.

Here are some images of the battery drain and what to look for on Amazon for the case. It's well worth the $. I'm waiting for a screen protector to arrive later in the week as well. If anyone has questions, shoot them over!

Where do you get this screen? Not that it's real useful but I'm just curious. .

Go to settings > battery... That's where you see the basic info, then if you click on battery usage, it'll show you the percentages of the apps that have consumed the battery life. Hope that helps.

Weird. Mine doesn't show a "battery usage" place to click on

Very nice of you to post your suggestions and I saw your post on your S5 settings to optimize battery life but just can't live with many of them. Your 20% screen brightness is just way too low for me, turning off Location Settings ruins a lot of good Google features, and many of your other Settings just are too much of a compromise for me for what should be a good performing phone.

I'm coming from an iPhone 6 Plus that was 100% functional with high screen brightness, all Settings on, Bluetooth on, WiFi always on, etc. and battery life was phenomenal. I'm not expecting the S6 to beat the iPhone but at least play in the same general league, but it is looking like the S6 is roughly 1/2 of the battery life of the 6 Plus in real world usage if things continue to hold true.

I'm burning 4-5% per hour just in Standby on the S6 on WiFi which makes no sense at all, and all of the offending apps, according to GSAM, are system apps so it's not a third party app causing any of the battery life problems here as you noted above. I'm hoping that either things settle down after a few days or Samsung/Google have an update that can fix this but I'm seeing the same issues with the new HTC M9 as well from their forum.

Anyway, very kind of you to post clever ways to minimize battery drain but, at least for me, my $1000+ phone (with shipping and tax) needs to be 100% functional first and I just can't compromise down key features in the name of battery savings. It should be much better than it has been and that's the issue, at least for me.

I actually have my location stuff off and I'm still getting stupid bad battery life.

And just like your comment says it's actually annoying me having it turned off because I LOVE using the Google now stuff. I used it all on the note 4 just fine.
