Got my logitech revue

>> Gotta get my audio setup figured out. My amp doesn't have HDMI, and I'm not sure if the cable box is pumping video *and* audio to the Revue. Probably a setting somewhere?

You can also use optical between the GTV and your amp. That is, setup to GTV HDMI, GTV to amp optical, GTV to TV HDMI.

So it runs 2.1 update 1. Wonder if they will update to gingerbread. Maybe that is what was holding up the release? Even though the big guy just showed up today?

My thoughts on the Logitech Revue

After getting everything setup, which was really simple, the setup could not have been easier. I have Verizon cable and internet with a wireless n router and it is very fast browsing, steaming you tube is flawless and streaming netflix videos is way better than on my wii. The netflix app is ok, needs ability to browse more than just your instant queue. Getting around the interface is pretty intuitive. I would say I figured out how to do 90% of the functions within the first 30 min of using it. I was surprised that there was a Twitter app but not facebook. Needs that. The leanback with youtube is fantastic. The Logitech keyboard is much better than the Sony remote imho and I love the Android app. From an overall view of the Google TV format I really like it. I typically surf the web etc. on my phone while I watch tv, but this really integrates everything into one user experience which I really like. No more missing the big play cuz you were updating your facebook, lol. I would like to be able to drag the picture in picture box around on the screen because it sometimes interferes with the controls behind it. If you think about the future of having the market on this you really see how this is going to change everything, just think about downloading games and playing them with your phone as the game controller. I love the way you can just sit on your couch after a long day, grab the keyboard and have everything you want at your fingertips and on a huge screen(once the market gets on there anyways).

Can you search content on home network i.e. music, movies, etc.. I am trying to decide between revue and roku. I know roku you can set up a 'channel' for network content..

Yes. You can search your home network as long as your router is set up properly, and the other devices are on. Its not as integrated as the web/program search is, more like browsing

I'm still trying to figure out why I cannot stream CBS shows. Is it just me or is this an issue with the Revue?

Yes, it is everyone. This website had an article on it a few days ago, but basically most of the major networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, I believe) are blocking the Revue from using their streaming sites. Fox still works, and Google is supposedly in discussions with the other networks to unblock them.

My setup was real easy and only took 15 minutes including downloading the update. I love the keyboard and Android app. I do notice what Phil was saying about lag in the live tv video feed. I hope this is fixed promptly. I do have a few questions though. Will the Logitech Harmony PS3 adapter work with the Revue system? With the Android app I can switch inputs on my AVR but can't actually control the components. Will there be a way to add other activities other than "Watch Google TV" to the app?

For you guys that bought this or the Sony, what role do you see it playing in your life? I usually surf the net on my phone or ipad while I'm watching tv. I've got a ps3 that streams netflix, so I don't really see where this fits into a electronics/entertainment ecosystem. Not trolling, but really trying to find out how you guys plan to use it and what it's going to replace or augment in your current electronics lineup.

This is a good question. Let me give it a shot;

I see this as an aggregator of content. I have a 2009 mac mini which is technically a much more capable device however it does not integrate well- it sort of lives out on its own HDMI input and is accessed when I have something specific for it to do. The google device is inline with my cable TV so it is always a click away which makes a big difference for usability in my opinion. The killer app at this point is searching TV listings- Saturday for instance- UM played UNC and I was not sure if the game was going to even be broadcast on TV. Normally I would call up my guide and go through all of the football listings to try and find the game. With the GTV I hit the search key and typed in Miami. Bam- one click it was live. I had a buddy over and we were looking at cars for him- it was easy to throw the game into a pip box down in the right corner and search auto trader- if something exciting happened we could call the game up to full screen with a click and then go right back to the browser. I am stuck with Atlantic Broadband which has a guide/dvr inteface from 1989- so one of my main goals was to stop using that and the GTV allows me to do it. All content is searchable and broken down into categories. I am amazed at how much is actually on TV- I never see it since I seemed to pop between the same few channels.

DVR is not searchable- but I can control it using the keyboard just like I do now using its native interface. I can also search for content in the google interface and choose record which hotlinks to my native DVR- so DVR is not fully integrated but it is pretty good.

For me, GTV was not about opening up an online world of content that I never knew existed. It was about organizing what I do have and making it extremely easy to access and multitask with. With the content blocks that Hulu and some of the networks are imposing I actually have less content than before but the integration is awesome and I am banking on the hope that when this thing gets hacked (like our phones) and the app store opens all of these content blocks will be circumvented (if they are not worked out officially already) and we will start to see what the device is really capable of which. Looking at what is accomplished with our phones I dont think radical improvements and work arounds are a stretch.

Minor points:
1. AFAIK Dish DVRs are searchable (and you can even schedule recording directly from search results).

2. For Tivo I actually schedule recordings via Tivo.com web interface, not with the Tivo native UI. I setup a bookmark for that page and now when I search for tivo I get in the the search results.

^^What he said.

I have a Harmony remote that I used to switch between activities like watching cable TV, watching a cable movie (audio from the receiver), swapping to Media Center on the HTPC, watching a DVD, listening to music on the iPod, etc. Said remote has been retired. I can watch TV, surf the internet, watch a DVD, a Netflix movie, listen to Pandora and do all kinds of stuff without every reconfiguring or switching an input. My TV has seven inputs and I now only use one of them. Same with the receiver.
