Got my MHL cable... no sound

I have tried it on different TVs and it seems to have something to do with the TV. Perhaps there is a a weird formatting issue. My off-brand TV gets no sound, but my Samsung does. Very odd.

I have not been able to get sound from my MHL cable still, when connected to my TV. Has anyone confirmed that it should work with sound and video? Thanks

Yes. I just got the MHL adapter from Expansys and can confirm that the HDMI connection transmits both audio and video. Its required to plug the power cable into a wall adaptor, not a PC usb port. I used the OEM HTC charger with the MHL and it worked fine.

Now if I can only figure out what video standards are required for the 3Vo to play.

Some where else (possible XDA) I thought I read that this was related to the SpiderMan game. Have you played SpiderMan and when playing turned the volume all the way down? If so I think the solution was to start SpiderMan up and turn the volume up in the game itself then quit the game and your HDMI sound will work.

Let us know if this fixes it.

I bought an T-mobile HTC Sensation 4G. I also bought a Menotek Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter to connect to my HDTV (Samsung). Like a number of you, I have the problem that the video shows up beautifully, but there is no audio, except via the 3.5 mm headset jack. I was wondering whether there is some kind of toggle that directs the sound output between one of three places: 1) the phone speakers (pretty feeble), 2) the headset jack, 3) the audio link on the MHL adapter. One of the reasons I think this is the case is that one time when I connect the adapter to the HDTV, audio did work. But, never again. This suggests that audio can be transmitted via the adapter and that some switch has been switched on or off unintentionally. I noticed in past threads that others were talking about a headset toggle problem with an older version of Android. Anyone have any insights/thoughts on this?

Update (9/4/2011): I sent the Menotek adapter back (I bought it on Amazon), and I received a "new" one a week later. Unfortunately, it behaved identically to the first one. It worked initially, then never again. Like the first one, the new adapter does play sound out the 3.5 mm headset output. Once again, I am wondering whether there is a software toggle that is used (intentionally or unintentionally) to switch the audio output among the possible paths.

Last night, I called Fry's Electronics to check whether they had a microusb hdmi mhl adapter, and they said they had three in stock. So, I drove on over. To make a long story short, after one and a half hours looking all over the vast shop -- assisted by five separate shop assistant and even the manager -- I was unable to find the adapters. It was unclear why the inventory system indicated that they had three in stock, when no one could locate them.

Bought a MHL off amazon, worked fine once, now it won't work at all.

I have the same issue. I bought the menotek off amazon. I worked fine the first time. I streamed HBO go through it.
The second time i tried it no picture, no sound, but the HDMI indicator came up on the phone in the upper left corner of the 3D screen, as it should. The third time i tried it (after a soft reset) no, nothing, not even the HDMI indicator in the upper left corner of the screen.
Anyone, anything?

I wish I could help. Others have already brought up that you have to have the power actually plugged into an outlet, not a usb source. Another thing is if you have multiple hdmi inputs, maybe changing inputs would help, or maybe some of you with sound issues have a conflict with your surround sound configuration. The only other thing I can think of is that if the adapter is an off-brand it just may not work right. I have used my HTC one that I got through the Sprint store numerous times on numerous TV's (at mine and at friends' homes) and haven't had a problem.

Software patch possibility?

So, does anyone with experience with the older Android versions, know anything about the headset toggle? It seems to me, this is a related problem. Is it possible that someone with more knowledge than me could write a software patch that enables the user to redirect the audio output from the headset to the HDMI MHL adapter?

Thanks,
Bob

Mine finally arrived today, purchased the HTC brand HML adapter for about $30 from android central after being back-ordered for two days.

I had to plug the power cord into the MHL adapter for it to output to my television (USB from my laptop powered it right up). Im getting video and sound to my Toshiba DLP (TV is from 2004 and has only one HDMI input).

HBO GO looks a bit blury on my 52", but maybe HBOGO isn't outputed in High Definition? The pre-loaded Green Hornet looked great.

I got my HTC adapter yesterday and was able to get audio and video, but the video quality was horrible. Is there some sort of setting I need to change to get it to output in HD?

Hey everyone!

I haven't posted in quite a while, but today I got my Menotek MHL adapter. Like everyone else, it worked once. I was about to demand a refund immediately, but didn't really look forward to being without a cable for a while again.

BUT THEN, i unplugged the HDMI cable from the MHL adapter, restarted my phone (through the Power button), and voila! It worked again. Not just once, but again at 2 different TVs.

Like I said, I only got it today, but let's see if it keeps working through the week.
