Hi,

I just bought a new android mobile. It runs on Jellybean v4.1.

I loved everything about this phone. Except im so disappointed that i cant seem to end calls if they are longer than 5 mins or so.

I got the phone changed 3 times and got brand new replacement units and all of them do this. If i speak for about 6 mins or more after i remove the fone from my cheek side, the proximity sensor doesnt reactivate the screen. So i cant hang up the call and if they dont hang up, thats it. I can hear the phone in their pocket till i pull out the battery. Any ideas what i can do ?

Thanks

Have you tried pressing the power button to turn the screen on? I know it doesn't solve your problem, but could be a work around until you do figure it out.

What brand and model of phone is it? Certain models seem more prone to problems with the proximity sensor (I'm looking at you, Note 3).

First things first, though--do you have a screen protector or case on? Those things can sometimes interfere with the proximity sensor, making the phone think it's still up against your ear.

Hi,

This is a LAVA Iris 405.
Pressing the power button does nothing. The screen is just black (switched off state).
I tried setting the phone to 'power button ends call' from the accessibility system menu, just for troubleshooting. Even that doesn't solve the problem.
Though it cuts the call. But the screen doesn't come back and i have to do a battery pull or keep pressing the power button like 20-30 times and the screen just blinks for a fraction of a second with every press and if im lucky it releases. Else If i then call myself from another handset, it releases the screen sleep and returns to normal. Very aggravating. I wish i could have some sort of workaround to overcome this problem because everything else is great in the phone.

What a manufacturer who couldn't even enable their fones to complete a 10 minute call successfully.

So then, no case or screen protector on your phone?

wierd...I've never heard about this before. Tech just does not stop to surprise...Did you try to root? Maybe this JB has some background things the phone makers put in it that messes it up...

Hi,

In the begining the phone had a thin protect film. Which is the way it comes in the box to prevent scratches but not a real screen protector though. Now i have put a reasonable quality screen protector on. Because the phone is new and i cant afford to scratch the screen if i may have to return the phone. The screen protector seems to be a decent quality one.

Im a new android user. Have been using palm for about 10 years and then switched to blackberry. Finally now onto android and hope to stay that way for a long while. So now i dont know much about rooting. Though i understand prima facie that its like gaining admin rights to the phone. If you feel it might help i might go ahead and try it out.

Diddy > yes i have no case around the phone or anything. But just one very slick screen protector.

Megakony > actually there are quite a few users with different fones having this issue. I found some threads on it here on the forums but no pinpointed solution other then most recommendations to remove any protective film or have a better screen protector and even down to cutting a hole in the screen protector to allow the proximity sensor to be exposed.

And it occurs with all the replacement units i got too. Hows that for a weird problem. They managed to recreate it like a quality control level.

And the heart of the problem is that its not something you can easily live with. Your bound to talk to someone for more than 6 mins and then your phone will lock up. And if you've held a lava phone in your hand you'd know how near impossible it is to open the battery compartment. And trying to do it when on the move and in my car etc without the safety net of my bed or couch below is asking for a shattering disaster.

But otherwise the phone is great. But whats the use of a Ferrari which is on a set shopping cart wheels. The chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Screen protectors can sometimes interfere with the proximity sensor. I suggest trying the phone without the screen protector on--yes, it means you'd have to peel it off, but if it's the main problem, it'll be worth it.

Tried all methods and the screen still goes to sleep on long calls and refuses to come back on. This is with both incoming and outgoing calls. Also the problem becomes more accentuated when the other guy forgets to cut the call and assumes we will hang up since we called him. The result is me locked onto this one call with nothing to do but listen to his phone in his pocket, live, or do a battery pull. I was recently in traffic when this happened and i cannot do a battery pull in that situation. So i had to keep the phone in my pocket and drive till i could get to a safe place where i could stop and do a battery pull. And doing a battery pull on this phone is the worst experience ever, since the rear cap is tightly fitted on and has no sliding action etc. You literally have to pry the body open using your nail while trying to separate the battery cover. Awful. And its such a thin phone that trying to just grip it and do this act will cause the phone to slip out of your hands many times during one reset. It has to be done over the safety of your bed or sofa.

Anyway its not a very expensive phone compared to the palm units etc which i previously used to own, but still its bad design for a phone which sports amazing features that im completely satisfied with. Except for one other smaller gripe i couldn't digest, which is the fact that theres no independent ring tone for dual sim. So calls coming to either sim sound the same. This one gripe alone i got over by finding a small 3rd party app (which happens to be the only one doing this) to handle independent ring tones for each sim.

However the current workaround is that i found an option under the accessibility menu > PRESS POWER BUTTON TO END CALL. I guess they know this glitch existed ? Or is that a part of android's OS i dont know. But now i seem to have an out and am able to at least force hangup such locked screen calls. When i use the power button and disconnect the dormant screen gets reactivated thus alleviates the need for the dreaded battery pull.

It's part of the OS. The accessibility options are for people with various handicaps to help them use the phone easier, like using the power button to end a call for people with vision problems. But as you can see, it can work for other things.

I had a small question though. Is it possible to backup my basic phone settings or are you aware of any freeware app which can do this. I mean something to only backup my basic phone settings such as my ring volumes. Sim settings. My view preferences etc. Im not looking for other app and their settings being backed up. If i can back up my apps and their settings too that would be a bonus but for now the basic phone settings back up would help. This is because every time i reset my phone i have to re-customize my phone which takes hours due to the myriad of settings in the OS.

Go to Settings/Security or Settings/Backup (it depends on the phone), and check the Backup Settings option. This backs up a number of your settings (sorry, can't tell you exactly which ones) to your Google account, so that if you factory reset and then link the phone to your Google account, those settings should reload.
